Metrolink Crash: Driver Leaves Scene After Train Collides With Truck

The driver of the truck fled the scene, according to police, but was later detained about a mile from the crash site. Police originally said the driver was arrested, but Oxnard Assistant Police Chief Jason Benites said later today he had been stopped but was not under arrest.

Benites told reporters the 54-year-old man was driving a produce truck when he turned right onto the tracks, eventually getting stuck on the tracks. Minutes after the crash, Benites said, an officer found the driver and said he looked disoriented.

The driver, a 54-year-old Arizona resident, was hauling a 12-foot trailer southbound on Rice Avenue and attempted to turn right onto 5th Street. He apparently misjudged the turn, however, and drove onto the railroad tracks, according to Jason Benites, assistant chief of the Oxnard police. The truck appeared to be an early 2000s-model Ford F-150, he said.

The five-car train was bound for downtown Los Angeles and speeding through darkened agricultural fields at 79 mph when the engineer spotted a truck on the tracks at 5th Street and Rice Avenue and pulled the emergency brake, authorities said. Passengers recalled feeling a sudden jerk before they were lifted into the air. Witnesses stared in disbelief as the pickup truck erupted into flames and the train's passenger cars slewed from the tracks in impossible directions.
