Spring days with kids and cows

We spent last weekend at my inlaws ranch on a spring camp trip. We run our little bunch of cows up there all summer and decided to haul them out and spend a couple days. Littlest H turned three while on the excursion so we threw him a desert birthday. He likes unwrapping presents but most of us do!

By that look he may really like openin' presents! :D

When i was a kid i got buckets and sticks as presents! This kid got lots of loot! A new straw hat, a bow and arrows, tool kit and a baseball set with a tee! The little bugger has cooler stuff than I do! :D Now ya gotta aim exactly at the black powder pile by the stump......

It's a game like fetch! Shoot the arrow, run and get it. And smile a lot! :D

His sister, little H had to test drive the stuff to make sure it was kid friendly. "There goes a long fly ball! It's up there. It's out there. And it's GONE!" :D

Can't decide if your kid gets a tool set and "fixs" a cedar tree if that is a good sign or not! :???: Maybe he'll become a tree surgeon! No tree huggers allowed!

A tractor, a birthday boy and his Grandma! That makes for a great day when your three!

The wife and youngsters went wading while i stayed high and dry. This creek provides water for irrigation for the town of Rush Valley. Without it, the town probably isnt there.

Now for a couple shots of range improvements. The Forest Service had been doing a watershed improvement project in this drainage. The have a giant frontend loader with a tree shredder attached on the front. Looks like a angry tree hating dinosaur. They go through thick juniper patches and take out most of the trees. Then they seed the area from a plane and this is the result.

200 yards up the road in an area they havent done. The juniper trees have deep tap roots and millions of hair roots a 1/4 inch below the surface also. They drink a lot of water. And they crowd out a lot of other plants. Can ya see the difference?

Up the valley a ways civilization is creeping in like a plague!  Folks are moving out and away from the big citys which is a very bad idea! People should really stay in the citys and encourage others to move there also! City people do build (i mean have payed someone to build) pretty gates. Us poor uncivilized folks didnt even know this area was divided once much less twice! Atleast now theres a nice sign to explain how things are divided!

Had to throw in a shot of our last heifer and her calf. She (momma) was a fall calf and was going to be bred for the first time this spring. She will be 2 in August. I had the vet preg check her with some other cows and he said not only heavy but will calve in three weeks! Neighbors bull? :???: Anyway, here's proof that a 800 pound heifer can do just fine as a 1st calf heifer. 75 pound bull calf unassisted.

Looks like your son had a memorable birthday celebration and your whole family had a wonderful camping trip. Great pictures. Thanks for letting us come along.

Thanks for the photos. Looks to me that you know what is most
important in this life...FAMILY!! So good that you spend time with
yours. They grow up way too fast.

As for your 800 lb. heifer, years ago the theory was that a 2-year old
needed to weigh 750 lbs. before calving. Far cry from that now!!!
Genetics, ya know!

I like your country. We are going to do some travelling, so might
go through your area sometime in the next 10 years!!!! :p

Looks like you had a great time. How are we ever gonna find a moose if you can't find so much as a turkey. :p Maybe you would have better luck if you hooked up the baler. 8)

You guys are fortunate to have a Forest Service that will spend money on range projects.

I see you have the same problem with your rancher that I do with mine ,( front tires)
I just replace mine this week. Couldn't believe they were 80 bucks apiece. I am also puzzled why the fronts wear out to much faster than the rears. My rancher has about 9,000 miles on it and this is the 3rd set of tires on the front.

I always enjoy your pictures.
