Spring in the Air-in places?

Yesterday I had to run north to the summer pasture to get some cattle panels I might need during calving....I was pleasantly surprised at all the snow-- even tho down here on the river I have no snow- just ice and mud... 15 miles north and there is 4-5 inchs of snow on the flat- and still some large drifts in the draws and coulees- even some big coulees drifted almost flat full of snow...I chickened out and didn't try one coulee to get over and look at some reserviors as I'm sure if they aren't full they will fill.......

I probably shouldn't be saying this after hearing everyone talk about their dry conditions- but the temp was about 40 and every coulee, creek or draw was running water- and the low spots were ponds- with honkers going everywhere......That snowstorm after the 1/2 inch of rain has done us good- should be some flowers and grass this spring...... :D :D

Thanks for making me feel so much better. Yesterday when I got in from riding I was so doggone cold I had a blanket over my lap and one wrapped around me in front of the fire and was still shivering. Then this morning woke up to a blizzard that you couldn't see across the yard after that broke a north wind blew that was cold enough to chill the devil himself. Kinda tough on the calves and makes the cowboys wonder if they are going to make it to grass :!:

The air changed about 4 days ago up here too. There is a distinctive smell, taste and feel to the air when it changes in the spring and fall. So I officially declared spring up here on Monday after a few inches of snow fell on Sunday. Been melting ever since. Probably about 1/2 the snow is gone now. Roads and such are clear. Good times ahead.

Another decent day around here again today. Took a little trip to Spearfish to see the dentist. It is most always a few degrees warmer in the Black Hills(in the winter, but cooler in the summer), and was again today. There is a very good snowpack in the upper Black Hills, but nothing in the foothills and plains. There is supposed to be a storm from the Black Hills and east of there on Saturday, but we are probably on the dry end of it again.

When we got home today, there were two heifers that had calved in a pile, and both wanting the same calf. I watched them a while and finally separated them with a calf, and they both seemed contented. That made three today. Must be time for spring and calving. :!:

went and started the subaru this morning at 6:20....let it warm up for 10 minutes and when I left for work, the blizzard the hit us had visibility to about 15-20 feet...the road was greased pig-sh## and when I got to the hospital in town, i called cowboyup so he could warn the kids!!! He informed me that the "forecast" for the region called for "clear and still"....my response was "???????!!??"....he replied "CLEAR up to your a$$ and STILL snowing!!"
