I had about 80 pairs 18 miles from home that I hadn't weaned yet. I purchased Quiet Wean nose flaps so today we ran the calves through to get a shot of Blackleg HS and Vista Once and installed the flaps. The corral is kind of a flimsy deal but works pretty slick. My daughter and I gathered the cows and I pealed the cows off with my horse and Britt put them out the gate and penned the calves as I brought them to her. The cattle worked nice and quietly. We have a old Powder River alley leading to a Ranger chute made in Britt, Iowa(Not why we called our daughter Britt) that is 2 years younger then I am. It got semi retired when I purchased a Stampede Steel hydraulic chute about 12 years ago but it still works good and I kind of enjoyed running it again today.Britt likes our tub system better them our make shift Bud box but it did work pretty fair.
I know the vaccine should have been given at least 2 weeks before weaning but I am hoping the stress will be reduced on these calves and when we haul them home on Friday they will settle in and go to eating.
I will keep you updated on how many flaps are lost and the general well being of the calves.
