Starting to Calve

Calving is just starting, and I've had 20 so far. My heifers are over half done, and tomorrow I'm sorting and scourguarding more heavy cows.

One of the first-calf heifers. So far, they've been easy calving, good, quiet mothers :D .

The calves have been a nice size for heifers. Now, if they'll start growing into something, I'll be set  .

Another heifer pair hiding out in the tornado debris :? . At least the dead trees are making wind breaks  .

Yes those sure are nice calves and cows. I only have two more heifers one was bred late and will be late.
Cows started everything is early. Calves are pretty small this year.

Looks like you've got a good start. Don't suppose you would rent me some of that bare ground when calving starts here. If you can deliver 3-400 acres I promise to send them back when I'm done. :D

Just send your girls down here to the tropics for calving. They wouldn't know how to act without wolves and bears (not yet anyway), and bare ground. They would need to acclimate to the winds though  .

They would overheat and you would end up helping them.

You're probably right, a 2 month holiday and it would take them a year or so to re acclimate them back to here.. And, they would miss the mosquitos. :D

Those are some tough, agile little buggers, raised up in the rocks and wind.

Yes, they like to hide in the rocks which is fine with me. I figure once they've nursed and are tagged, I don't care to see them again until branding in a perfect world  . The cow better keep them alive and well. If a cow comes to feed with a tight bag, I will try to find them. Actually, once they get a few days of age on them, they usually come to feed with their moms.

We've had a few over the years fall in between boulder crevaces, or get crammed underneath boulder gaps  . I'll try to find and scan pictures of some of our various rescues... before digital cameras :D . All I can say is that the calf hook has been used for a lot more than catching calves to tag  .
