Well...some bad news for Lil Lilly.....Toilet Paper don't get to go to state finals this weekend. She's been ridin him the last few weeks, and he's started buckin. goin into the barrels.....every one of em. He'll down his head and try it, and she's been in tears ever time it happens. Besides havin to deal with gettin mad at him.....which she didnt do anything to him per say....just not understandin "WHY"....well last night we figured out "WHY".....he's outta place in his back, about 6 inches from his withers in the middle of his back.....there's a lump (very small almost not noticeable). I told her to take him and unsaddle him after his buckin episode...and brang him back to me, that's when I noticed it.. So she did......I rubbed down his back...on each side...and where that lil lump is he flinches.....to the point that he steps away from you to get away from the pain. So.........best thing to do, is leave him home and not run him until we can get him in to the vet and have him adjust him......and make sure he's not hurtin no more. She was terribly upset......not knowin what she was gonna do without him there.....but her sponsor volunteered another horse for her to ride. She's riden the mare off and on all summer, so it's not a "new ride". Thank goodness they'll let you switch horses or we'd be out her entry fee on TP.
I told her.......everything happens for a reason, I'd rather know what was wrong....than to take him, and him be buckin..and possibly hurtin her, or himself. The good Lord watchin over her is all I can say. She's not upset anymore about him havin to stay home. Least now she knows it's not somethin she's doin to him makin him buck.....she was really beatin herself up over this the last couple weeks tryin to figure it all out. Just gettin frustrated and not knowin.
We'll be pullin out tomorrow mornin bright and early. And won't be home until who knows what time Sunday night. Will let you all know how things go when we get home.
Now......gotta get busy gettin the trailer loaded so all we hafta do in the mornin is load the horses and go.

Well darn it anyhow...I'll bet she is takin it hard, cause they are such a great pair together...but I know first hand about horses backs being out and all of a sudden they're not themselves...Ya know though, a good adjustment and a cold water bath would get him back into shape in no time. Course I'm sure at this late time it'd be hard to get him worked on. Well whatever she rides, I hope she has a great run this weekend. I'm hoping she will hear me cheer for her from way up north!!!   Good luck!

Good luck to her at State.
When good horses start bucking there usually is a physical reason.
Good for you guys for figuring it out, not just 'get after the horse'
for what he is doing. Acting up is really the only way they have of
telling us something is wrong.

It's not uncommone for barrell horses to have hock problems
too, but they can be injected. It's a very common thing. We don't
think about hock problems much here in the north, but in the
south it is sure something serious competitors watch for. Sore
hocks can make a horses back sore.

I wonder if that lump could be a warble that got squashed in his back,
or a nail coming out of the saddle. Did you happen to check underneath her saddle, Jersey Lilly?
