he had tracks on his 4 wheeler and was down in my meadows on the snow last winter surveying. He did a survey job for me two years ago.

99th birthday celebration planned for Lloyd Baker

Lloyd Baker will celebrate his 99th birthday later this month. An open-house reception is planned for Saturday, May 29, starting at 6 p.m. in the Thayne LDS Stake Center.
Baker who lives in Etna and maintains a full-time survey office in Thayne, was born in 1911 in Afton. Raised on a dairy farm in Etna, he was the eldest of six boys and two girls. He attended elementary school in Etna and high school in Afton.
Baker holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Wyoming, graduating in 1940. He was married to Ednamary Welborn in 1940 and they had five children. During Baker’s career he worked for the US Bureau of Reclamation on dams in Wyoming, Arizona and California. He worked for the Bechtel Corporation in the Sau Salito, California shipyard.
He taught engineering at Utah State from 1943 to 44 and at Boise State from 1944 to 45. He also worked as an engineer for the Soil Conservation Service in Montpelier and Grace at and at the Montpelier Phosphate mine.
After returning to California in 1947, he did engineering and surveys for subdivisions, home construction, oil refinery upgrade, highways and sewer systems and was the city engineer for California communities of Hawthorne and Mountain View. He also mainted an engineering business in San Francisco from 1950 to 1967. Baker’s career positions also included chief surveyor and engineer for the Bechtel Coporation on the Carlin Gold Mine, the North Las Vegas Water treatment Plant and the Bay Area Rapid Transit in San Francisco. He also worked for nuclear power plants in Massachusets, Marland and Connecticut.
In 1973, Baker returned to Star Valley where he opened his engineering and surveying business. That business remains open today in 2010.
