Strippin' or Squeezin'?

Not sure how many of you have done alotta hand-milking, but what's your personal preference - do you squeeze the teat, or strip it down with your fingers? I've found it alot easier to squeeze. Less mess, no milk gettin' your hands all sticky, because then you have hair and everything sticking to you as well. And that stuff always end up in the milk pail. :x

My family was together for the weekend, and my Uncle said he always preferred squeezin', but my Mom disagreed and said that strippin' the teats always worked better, because squeezin' 'em always causes back pressure, which pushes the milk up into the udder.

I said squeezin' has been workin' fine for me, the pail seems to fill up mighty quick so I'm not too concerned. Just curious as to what anyone else has experienced.

Both-- Sometimes switch off to finish the job- sometimes just to rest the hand muscles -especially if your milking 3 or 4....

My thoughts exactly - squeezin's faster, but you can strip out the last of it if you really want to. She's still feeding her own calf, so I'm not concerned with getting every last drop.

The best technique for milking is squeezing but one finger at a time working your way to the end
Done it for many years growing up on a dairy
you have to rotate the fingers so they squeeze in succesion and it is the fastest way I know of

It all sorta depends on the size of the Tit, but squeezing is the way to go if your trying to milk quantity!

I've seen cows where you could purt'in near get two hands on one tit, and then i've seen them were your lucky to get two fingers! Especially the milk cows I grew up with which usually had some Charolais Cross in them and weren't really bred for "milk cows". Kicking mules some of them to!

I think they breed the milking cows with small tits so the milking machines can work better on them or something right?

From an old dairyman; Place the thumb against the teat pointed downward with the fingers around the teat. Using the index finger, press it against the teat with the base of the thumb on the other side closing off the upper end of the teat. Then press the other fingers in order-middle, ring, and little. That prevents milk in the teat from re-entering the udder and strips out the teat completely.

I really dislike cows with teats suficiently long enough to squeeze. So its strip. Also what jinglebob sed - if I'm milking a cow, it is to minimize a bad situation.

I'm a squeezer too

I started milking by hand at about 10 years old and did 3 cows a day for a few years.

Gave me popeye forearms.

Glad I don't do it anymore though.

My cow is a purebred Brown Swiss, and although she came from a dairy that uses machines, her teats are long enough at all four corners to get your hand on real good for squeezin. I couldn't imagine hand milking some of those Jerseys with little 3-Smartie teats.
