Dear President.. -- A majority of US Senators have signed a letter to President Bush asking him to reject a WTO proposal that makes deeper cuts in domestic farm supports. Wthe letter urges Bush to direct US negotiators to insist on an ambitious, but balanced result in the trade talks.



OECD Subsidy Report -- Government subsidies account for nearly one-third of gross farm receipts in the industrialized world. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has released its list of farm subsidies based on the so-called Producer Subsidy Equivalent. That figure represents the cost to taxpayers and consumers in supporting agriculture. The United States subsidy level is listed at 16 percent of the total farm output. That compares to 32 percent in the European Union, 21 percent in Canada, 56 percent in Japan and 68 percent in Switzerland. Mexico is at 14 percent; Australia is at five percent.
