Sidney Fund-Raiser Breaks $6,000

Sidney, Mont. – Generous contributors at a recent R-CALF USA rollover calf-sale fund-raiser hosted by Sidney Livestock Market Center generated more than $6,000 for the national organization. Bob Anderson, of Anderson Diamond Ranch, donated the calf and also helped organize the sale. Also auctioned off were “Bull Bucks,” donated by Candee Angus and Regency Acres, and a print by Montana pencil artist Don Greytak “Guardians of the Next Generation.”

“We are happy with the turnout for the sale and want to thank everyone for coming and supporting R-CALF,” Anderson said.

Jim Thiesen, of Regency Acres, also helped organize the event.

“We all need to work together to protect the integrity of the U.S. cattle herd,” Thiesen emphasized as he summed up the reason for hosting the meeting.

Before the fund-raiser got underway, R-CALF CEO Bill Bullard spoke to the area cattle producers in attendance about many issues, including marketing and trade matters, but the foremost subject of interest seemed to be the organization’s litigation against USDA and the agency’s Final Rule regarding bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and how USDA is relaxing import standards related to Canadian cattle and beef.

“USDA has already written a rule to allow older Canadian cows and bulls to be imported from Canada, even though there is conclusive evidence showing that Canada’s feed ban did not prevent the spread of BSE in that country,” Bullard said. “Our export customers remain concerned about Canadian cattle and beef being commingled with U.S. cattle and beef.

“We know from experience that no one other than R-CALF is willing to step to the plate to protect our industry from USDA’s aggressions,” he concluded. “That means that if it is to be done, cattle producers must do it themselves – through R-CALF.”

For every person not buying from them, there's one who will for the same reason.

Like one seedstock man that lives close to the border told me a couple years ago- he had to support the group that supported the ones that had supported him over the years...Like he said- there never was a Canadian at his bull/heifer sales anyway since they didn't fit into the Canuck Anaplas/Bluetongue trade barrier

Contributors Raise More Than $11,000 at Glendive Livestock Exchange

Glendive, Mont. – Area cattle producers were looking to the future at a recent R-CALF USA fund-raiser hosted by Glendive Livestock Exchange. Generous participants raised more than $11,000 for the national organization.

Long time R-CALF USA supporter Darrell Johnson, of the 101 Cattle Company, was quick to jump in with both words of support and financial support. During the rollover calf sale he urged other cattle producers to help the cause.

“Every cattle producer needs to get behind R-CALF because R-CALF is the only organization out there working for just you,” Johnson said. “This is for your children and your grandchildren.”

Many contributors mentioned they were looking to the future, and also looking forward to the influence that R-CALF will have on the live cattle industry for many years to come.

Ed Beery bought the calf in his grandchildren’s names.

“The contributions we are making and the things that R-CALF is working on today will have more impact on my grandchildren and the livestock industry that they will compete in, than on me and today’s markets,” Beery noted. “It is crucial that we keep working to leave them something worthwhile.”

The youngest rancher to bid on the calf was 4-year-old Jace Gentry, who accompanied his father Jim to the sale.

“Jace forgot to bring any money, so I’ll pay for his bid, too,” said Jim Gentry. “We’re looking ahead, hoping that ranching will be in his future. R-CALF is working to make that happen.”

R-CALF USA Southeastern Field Coordinator John West came from Texas to speak prior to the sale. He discussed four priorities R-CALF USA is currently working on: 1) the ongoing litigation against USDA and the agency’s Final Rule regarding bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and how USDA is relaxing import standards related to Canadian cattle and beef; 2) ongoing efforts to make certain any National Animal Identification System (NAIS) remains voluntary, not privatized, and that any NAIS incorporates existing ID systems, including hot-iron brands; 3) ongoing efforts to reform the Beef Checkoff; and, 4) ongoing efforts to implement Mandatory Country-of-Origin Labeling (M-COOL).

“The actions of today affect the course of our industry in the future,” West said. “The money raised at Glendive in the past has been critical to our success on Animal ID, COOL and the BSE/Canadian border litigation.”

People are going to do what they want, but with the exception of the inevitable handful of morons, nobody has joined R-CALF just to affront to Canadian producers. People joined R-CALF because they see them as the only national organization that truly represents them and is looking out for their best interests. It's not personal, it's business.
