Did you tie the fiador rig? An old cowboy showed me how to do those knots when I was a kid in the 1960's. It's been a handy thing to know ever since. I need to tie them several times a year though to keep from forgetting how.
I've run into many fellers who claim they can tie the fiador, but when pressed hard just cannot seem to manage it. In fact, I've never run onto anyone who can actually do it.
I have an old copy of "How to Make Cowboy Horse Gear" by Bruce Grant. In it he shows a way to do it, but it comes out upside down. He admits he never knew the proper way to tie it.
