We received a call from someone who noticed Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson and Senator John Thune both appeared in an ad in today's edition of the USA Today. The ad says that the Mayor is in opposition to one of Senator Thune's amendments.

This ad is on page 7-A of today's USA Today opposing Senator Thune's conceal and carry amendment. The guy who called us said he was shocked to see Mayor Munson opposing our Senator's bill and it even shocked the Mayor himself.

At the top of the ad it says in bold, "450 mayors ask the U.S. Senate: Will you stand with us, or gut our public safety laws?

The full page ad is in response to Senator John Thune's bill that he first introduced in late February regarding the right to bear arms. Now, the Senator is offering the concealed carry amendment to the defense authorization bill and that's what sparked today's opposition ad. In response to the ad Senator Thune said, "I think in many instances the people who are opposing it, perhaps come from big city areas of the country and are not well acquainted with 2nd Amendment issues."

Sioux Falls Mayor Dave Munson didn't realize he would be named in this ad because he says he signed on with this group for a totally different reason. "I'm not happy about it because when I look at it a few years ago when they came out with this we were talking about illegal guns and I don't think people should have illegal guns but I think people should have the right to bear arms," responded Mayor Munson.

Although the Mayor's name is on the ad he says he supports Thune's amendment and told me that we can expect him to disassociate himself with this group. "I think we're really mixing 2 different issues together and I don't think that's appropriate for what our mission was," said the Mayor today.

Senator Thune says his bill would help in reducing crime by providing reciprocity for the carrying of concealed firearms. The amendment would allow individuals to carry lawfully concealed firearms across state lines, while at the same time respecting the laws of the host state.
