Swift & Co. Gives Back To Worthington

Hundreds of Worthington families have been left behind after their loved ones were detained during last week's illegal immigration raid. The families are now in need of everything from food to money for heat this winter...and the company that once employed their family members is now trying to help.

Jerry Fiola works with immigrants in Worthington on a regular basis. His organization teaches English as a second language classes and also serves as a go between with the English and Spanish speaking communities in town.

Director of Community Education Jerry Fiola says, "As a result of being in contact with many of those families...many of those families were impacted by the I-C-E sweep through the community."

Fiola's organization is now getting help...Swift and Company has given them twenty-two thousand dollars to provide for more than 200 families left behind in Worthington after their family members were detained.

Fiola says, "The money does not go to the family directly...it goes to the vendors of services that the family's need, so if they have a rent payment then we would have to see an actual bill from the landlord."

The money can also be used for things like heating bills and electricity...but there is a two hundred dollar limit for each family and with the growing need in Worthington Fiola doesn't know how far that money will stretch.

Fiola says, "With 231 families affected the majority of those families are still in the community. I can't imagine we wouldn't go through the twenty-two thousand we received and then some."

Besides money from Swift, the families are also receiving many donations from around the community.
