From what we've been hearing on the news, this is serious stuff.

Is it the same strain as in Mexico? They sent samples from there to the Federal Lab in Winnipeg, and they found it was a new one.

A couple of years ago, when I was working at the vet clinic I was handling a lot of blood samples from pigs with influenza. I got the flu. So did my boss, and so did some of the guys working in the barns. No one else got it, even though we were in close contact. It was not fun!   This one's worse, because it can spread from person to person.

Yep--it sounds like its really spreading...Schools, business's closing down...My suggestion is that everyone should stock up on a few weeks supply of food and necessities in case they implement the quarantine policies they developed a few years ago for bird flu/pandemics...
My understanding of that policy is it shuts down a lot of ability to move around the country- travel, and transport of goods besides almost all international travel....

Hopefully that doesn't happen- and I doubt with the vaccines and antibiotics they now have it will get that bad as we've had breakouts of the differing strains of swine flu for years...
But history shows that this stuff can be bad with the 1918 outbreak killing between 50 and 100 million worldwide..... In the U.S., approximately 675,000 people died.

OT your a piece of work
You attack those of us who have been telling people the same thing BEFORE this happened NOW you are sounding the alarm??????
Good GAWD man

Oh HAIL, welcome to the club LOL better late than never and I mean that.

One note about flu you WANT expectorant NOT suppresent. You have to have the gunk come up and get it out. Dont forget oral hydration replacer you will get dehydrated very fast.
Hand Sanatizer is a MUST and if your in an infected area get some masks they wont stop the small germs BUT stop the spittle from those around you.

MsSage- I don't know what has your panties in a wad  -- but will you show me where I attacked anyone for preparing for emergency situations :???: ... Its something I've done for years and years- keeping several weeks supplies on hand-- after sitting thru numerous long term road closures from floods and snowstorms.... In fact I think I posted the same type of info a few years ago with the SARS and Bird flu concerns....

Interestingly- the CDC is saying that while this is not identical to a previous strain- it is similar to many previous outbreaks in that it is a mutant combination of swine/human/avian flu variaties....And they also said this is not as serious as SARS as they have drugs that the disease responds to- where they did not with SARS... And if need be they think a vaccine could be quickly developed...

It was almost the only news on TV today here. Maybe it's a slow news day? Or maybe they're just looking for a crisis to feed on. They've been saying that the cases in the U.S. and Canada so far have been a lot milder than in Mexico, but they don't know why yet.

This is nothing like 1918, and they're not comparing it to that pandemic either. My Great Grandfather died from the flu in 1918. He was 32 years old, healthy, and he was only sick for three days. That's all it took. This is not like that at all. Yet.

There's really only one thing to do if you have a respiratory illness, and that's to stay home, especially if it's a mild case, which most have been so far. The last thing anyone needs is people being "tough" and running around coughing all over things.

both cases are in Dickeson County. that would be the Abilene area (central Kansas.)

one of them was recently in Mexico, and the other was not specified.

also reports of a missing bioweapons vial from a military base......
