Tagging Calves & a Bad Wreck

if you pack a pair of hobbles you could put them around there neck close to the pole , then the rope will always be high and run by there nose so that the horse will have to be faced up ,it's what I use when I'm ropin off a colt

Neck rope; hobbles, both great ideas.

Rick's horse was facing the calf and holding the rope good. He just suddenly spooked for whatever reason and actually ran right past the calf. The horse is 7 and hasn't been used on the ranch for long as Rick bought him last fall. Rick had tied his reins to the rope as well and still had the tail of the rope close to him. When he jerked the tail to untie the slip knot nothing happened as his saddle string was tangled. I have thought on this all day and can't decide how we could of prevented it. I should'a stayed till the calf was tagged. Rick maybe trusted his pony too much. He had a 30 foot rope which makes it hard to just dally and hold the tail of your rope while ya work. I have a 60 foot rope that allows lots of slack to work with. And most days i carry a piggin string to tie the calf and then get rid of the rope while i doctor or tag. I had to work my day job today and am waiting for a call from Rick as to how the calf is. I just think she had too much trauma to get over. The horse needs lots of work and teaching and he may get over his issues but I don't think Rick will do it because of the taste this deal left in his mouth. I hope somebody gets the horse and helps him reach his potential. And sometimes a change of scenery really helps all involved. I have lots of ideas to help the horse overcome his panic but don't have the time. You owe the animal to do your best by him!

I agree the horse just needs more time on the end of a rope, and i don't mean hanging from a tree  I'd probably get him roping in a corral situation, going strong, before a range roping opportunity ever presented itself. The best color of a horse is "Fat". :cboy:

The worst wreck I've seen in the branding corral is when the rope got under the tail of the horse. He spooked and headed for the gate. Before the guy could get his dally undone the horse jumped a set of wrestlers on the ground and caught both of them in the head with his hooves. Both guys were knocked unconscious for about 10 minutes. When they both came to everybody started breathing again. Real scary. In 40 years of roping and dragging calves nothing else even compares to that incident.
