Welcome And29. Some here like to chat about things like EPDs and what they mean and some for some unknown reason like to be mean. Taking advise from your animal health professional was astute. You don't have to be up to speed in every field as long as you are in contact with people that are.

While maybe the poster should have known more before his decision(probably goes for all of us at some time or other) he was asking for advice to increase his knowledge.

It is rather rude of us in agriculture to condemn the man for wanting to expand his knowledge. At a time when the agriculture sector faces so much negative publicity, this is NOT the time to condemn him. Offer help and advice...to do anything else is just WRONG

Welcome andrew and good luck

Hmmmmm Soapweed uses yearlin bulls without epd's. And seems to do just fine. Im not sayin he does or doesn't know how to read the numbers.....but it's not something that's manditory. Not everyone flies their kite strictly by numbers.

I mean...gee whiz look at all the previous ranchers that flew theirs before epd's even existed.

Birth weight is the only epd ever used on this place and somehow we've muddled through.

Don't know why you would throw rocks at anyone for using EPDs. Heck, if you don't want to use them, then don't. Someone else's choice to use them as a supplemental selection tool should not be called down, should it? Have an open mind once in awhile, folks!

Didn't notice anyone throwing rocks for using EPD's. I did notice someone getting grief for not using / understanding them. I figure if EPD's are a tool folks want to use then fly at it. I also figure there is no sin in not using them either. Some folks even figure one colour is better than another, and if they are happy in that belief then that's just fine near as I can tell.

I'm not a literate cow person much like andrew. However I'd guess that my average weaned steer will weigh 700 -certainly the better ones beat some of the bulls I've seen posted on this site. This yr I kept the two top steers to try the grass fed beef thing. At 12 months, they averaged 950 on pure grass. Interesting experiment.
I've lost one calf in the last 10 yrs, have yet to pull one and watch them like a hawk. You know cows have been calving for lots of yrs before man got to playing games to pull them.

Little bit of common sense goes a long ways in the cow business-doesn't hurt if you're not afraid of hard work and I'm sure I've asked more than my share of dumb questions from people smarter than I am.
