The Taiwanese Agricultural Goodwill Mission signed a letter of intent today with the U.S. Grains Council committing to purchase 7.5 to 10 million metric tons, or 295 to 394 million bushels, of U.S. corn in 2008 and 2009. The agreement is part of a longtime partnership between the Council and Taiwan, according to USGC Chairman Vic Miller.

“Since the first Agricultural Goodwill Mission in 1998, Taiwan has imported more than 40 million tons of corn from the United States, worth more than $4 billion dollars for America’s farmers,” said Miller. “Over the last three decades, Taiwan has grown to become one of our largest customers, importing nearly 4.5 million tons of U.S. feed grains last year, which amounts to 96 percent of Taiwan’s total feed grain imports. It is no longer just corn and sorghum; barley for feed and grain co-products like distiller’s dried grains with solubles are now in the import mix.” Also reaffirming trade relations with Taiwan were the Council’s partner organizations, representing every branch of U.S. agriculture: National Grain and Feed Association, North American Export Grain Association, U.S. Meat Export Federation, U.S. Poultry & Egg Export Council, U.S. Soybean Export Council and U.S. Wheat Associates.

Miller said the long-lasting partnership with Taiwan and other trading partners has enabled America’s farmers to rest assured that their products are in high demand. In fact, according to the Agriculture Department, one in three U.S. farm acres is planted for export and 25 percent of gross farm income comes directly from exports.

After leaving Washington, many of the Goodwill Mission participants will travel to Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota for field visits and meetings with local organizations and officials.
