Taking Mineral to cows

Went checking on cows today as it was a little cooler - Only got to 84 at the north place-- took the cows some mineral and found two of the neighbors bulls in my pasture, so had to get them back with their own girls first...Then this time I actually remembered to take the camera with me as I went down the creek to check out the girls and mineral....

Cows are really hanging around the water holes and creek during the day..The creek is full of spring fed holes like this, which I hope will hold up for the summer or we will have to pump.....

3 of the old mares hanging around a water hole with the cows- These 3 stay with the cows a lot rather than going with other horses- true "cow horses"...

July2006005.jpg

A little bull resting while the girls graze- probably pooped from fighting with the neighbors bulls...I think he was thanking me for getting rid of those ugly old red baldy bulls that were trying to move in on his territory...

Heat and having to walk for water doesn't seem to be hurting the cows any yet...This is the old gal that I wrote earlier about that apparently slipped by me for a few years...She has an 8 branded on her hip and I know she isn't 8 years old  Not bad for that age raising a calf- wish I had a 100 like her...

Another bunch of cows down the creek around another water hole...

July2006004.jpg

These gals don't seem too stressed either...

One of my objectives- Took this for Faster Horses  I put out the last bags of Vigortone I had and this tub could have used more- will have to call Roger again as the cows are starting to hit it a lot harder...

The reason the cows are hanging on the creeks--water holes in the center of the pasture are dry- one spring on the east side is still trickling a little, but has sure slowed down...

What the cows have to look forward to as soon as we get thru combining-IF we combine...Dryland hayfields were so bad and pastures going downhill so fast that we didn't cut the hay and will graze it along with the stubble fields....

So how old is that cow? She sure looks like she's in good shape, has a nice bag.

She has to have been born in 88- which would make her 18....She is the last of a bunch of shortermers I bought from a fellow several years ago...Paid $385 per head- so it had to be awhile ago....Must have always come in looking good with a good calf or I wouldn't have let her slip by.....

Thanks for the pictures of the good cattle, OT.

Oh, and of the good mineral too.

There's a real good combination, good genetics and good nutrition.
Doesn't get any better than that.

I must say you have more green showing that we do at this point.

I think I will change my sloagan at the bottom to "Just waitin' for the next rain." Cuz that is soooooo true.

Great pictures, thanks.
P.S.
We have had other people tell us about their old cows on Vigortone mineral. They get younger looking~so I wouldn't cash that old cow in yet.

FH,

I will have to get you to pm rogers phone number again as I lost it and I would like to get our cows on that mineral. Sure hope they dont use any animal proteins in it :? Why havent they got a depot set up in Canada?

EPA. Two governments. Heck if I know. And probably all three!!!!

Absolutely no animal protein. NEVER!!! Their quality control is above reproach. They even changed the formula of their dog food so it doesn't contain ruminents because of storing it in the same building as the mineral. Nope, NADA. NO ANIMAL PROTEIN. They are soooo strict it is unbelieveable. We can't even send the small pallets back to them. They don't want to take ANY CHANCES. Nothing goes back.

The mineral doesn't contain any protein or energy anyway. It is PURE
MINERAL. About the only product we have that contains protein is the Forage Pro.

I will pm you Roger's number. And anyone elses that wants it.

Msn! Now thats my kind of cow! Short and thick. I sure like cows that a re built like me and that arte easy keepers like me!

I bet you never had to waste much feed on her and she probably always weaned off a calf almost as big as she was.

In a few years when the market goes plumb to hell ( ) give me a call and I'll try to come and buy your heifer calves Oldtimer. :)

But I'd rather have solid black or red. OK?

FH- Problem is that a lot of the green is Butter gum cup weed (don't remember what the real name is) that only shows up in the dry years when the pasture is stressed...I had to go thru a pasture today to check out the community pasture water situation, since I'm going to move some cows down there next week and have never seen them so bad for years...At least the community pasture doesn't look too bad and there is still some water in the creek and spring fed water holes...

As many times as a few of these red bulls have gotten in I may have quite a few reds and red baldies in the spring  - which I don't really mind that much as long as everything is getting bred up good- but a couple of them red old bulls only wanted to fight and tear up fences and they weren't helping the neighbors cows much--I think they've been tied up still branding so haven't had time to check on bulls.. Good red angus/simmi cross bulls- from a good breeder who I fed his cows for a couple years...

I'm real impressed with your cattle OT, we've got a pretty big set of cows running around that are about the same age as yours and you'd never believe it looking at them. Your grass looks pretty tough we seem to be a lot better off, got another rain last night that should hold us again for a while.
