Obama Launches 2008 White House Bid

By NEDRA PICKLER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Barack Obama launched a historic campaign Tuesday to become the first black president of the United States and immediately tried to turn his political inexperience into an asset with voters seeking change.

The freshman Illinois senator - and top contender for the Democratic nomination - said the past six years have left the country in a precarious place and he promoted himself as the standard-bearer for a new kind of politics.

In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois state Senate, where he earned a reputation as a consensus-building Democrat who was strongly liberal on social and economic issues, backing gay rights, abortion rights, gun control, universal health care and tax breaks for the poor.

all things that will make him an early favorite for the Far left and boost him in the primaries,....but will take away from the moderate vote, critical to the general election.

But he did a great job of shutting Hillery up! (and out),..bet she hasn't been this mad since she found Bill's soggy cigar..

In 1999 he founded the bipartisan Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, which he still chairs. By the end of the 109th Congress it amassed 104 members. Under his leadership the caucus was instrumental in passing the The Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act through the House of Representatitve sin 2005. The caucus also blocked the Kennedy-McCain amnesty provision from passing through the House in 2006. Tom has written about the dangers of illegal immigration in his 2006 book In Mortal Danger: The Battle for America's border and Security.

"But Tancredo is actually a great deal more than a single-issue candidate with a penchant for controversy. He's also a rare fiscal conservative who means what he says
http://teamtancredo.org/issues.php

The same day, during a radio interview on Orlando talk-radio station AM 540 WFLA, Tancredo responded to a question asking about a potential U.S. response to a nuclear attack on U.S. cities by al-Qaeda by saying that one response would be to retaliate by "taking out" Muslim holy sites (specifically, Mecca) if it were clearly proven that Islamic terrorists were behind such an attack ([21],[22]). Days later, in an interview on CNN together with James Zogby, Tancredo claimed he meant the comment as merely a threat to retaliate and refused to apologize.

I think he might not get the Terrorist vote....but so far he has my vote!

On November 28, 2006, Tancredo was quoted in several news sources as referring to the city of Miami, Florida as a "Third World country."[4] His comments drew intense criticism from numerous political leaders and organizations, including Florida Governor Jeb Bush who called Tancredo's remarks "naive" in a letter to the congressman.[5] Tancredo replied in a letter "I certainly understand and appreciate your need and desire to try and create the illusion of Miami as a multiethnic 'All American' city," he said. "However, it is neither naïve nor insulting to call attention to a real problem that cannot be easily dismissed through politically correct happy talk."

or the Cuban vote,...

Student protest against a Tancredo speech at the Michigan State University College of Law on November 30, 2006 turned violent.

or the radical liberal student vote,...

On December 12, 2006, Tancredo was publically announced by the Rotary Club of Miami as its guest speaker before their group two days later[7]. The event was cancelled the next day by the restaurant, The Rusty Pelican, because of the media circus that his appearence would create, employees stating they would not show to work, and economic disruption his appearance could have from Hispanic Patrons, which the management states is 80% of the customer base.[8][9] First reported by South Florida Media that the congressman received a bomb threat, Miami Police Detective stated they were not treating it as such and the Rusty Pelican denied any such report. Tancredo referred to Miami being taken over by "Thugs," "Separatists," and that "I knew speaking your mind could be dangerous in Havana - I guess it's equally dangerous to do so in Miami. Apparently, there isn't much of a difference between the two anymore."

yep it looks like he lost the Cuban vote....(can Cubans vote?),..if not why would any politician care if he hurt thier feelings....gee I'm starting to really like this guy....bet the libs will hate him more then they hate Bush....(all the more reason to vote for him)  8)

so far not many are really trying to Run..

I am sure the liberals will try to shred him before the primaries even start,... but, so far of what I read, I like what he stands for.

Never really knew anything about him, but I do like some of the things he is saying from what you posted. Kind of stuff that makes a Conservative smile :)

I really believe that if a politician would stand up for what 80% of America thinks and feels with out worrying about being Politically Correct or catering to the small percentages of special interest groups he would get elected.

America is wanting a True Conservative and if the Republicans do not give us one soon we will get more divided in our selection. We need some Black and White issues candidates not the grey area ones that go left once they are elected.

Tancredo voted against it or Obama? I do not think I would ever vote for someone that voted against such a thing!

Red Robin
Is he prolife?

Tom Tancredo:
As a devout Christian, father, and grandfather, I am a strong believer in the rights to life for the unborn child. I also believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. For years, activist judges have undermined both life and marriage. As president I would stop this by appointing strict constructionists as judges, reining in the power of the judiciary, and supporting constitutional amendments that respect marriage and life.

Tancredo is good, the only obstacle he faces is the liberal press has had him in their sights and have done the very utmost to discredit him.
The only way they get anything on him is to misquote him........and that they have worked feverishly on.

I would like to know the reasoning behind the vote or what "amendments" the repubs attached to it because it went mostly by party line. 10 Dems voted for it and 1 repub plus lieberman voted against it. When it votes like that, you can almost bet that something got attached that the other party didn't like. Maybe another $50B for the war? Maybe it was something like the burning of the flag thing. There are already laws governing that so a constitutional amendment would be redundant. Just would like to see the entire bill or hear the reasonings to vote for and against before passing judgement.

Tancredo is our congressman. He is the only Republican that the local media supported - but then they usually support one just for kicks.

I don't think he has much of a chance although his thinking is right. Hopefully, his stance on protecting the borders and illegal immigration will force the others to address the issues.

It is a shame as most of the other republicans seem to moderate or even liberal on border issues..and have made a shambles of their personnel lives....

When his views on the issues are contrasted to the other leading republicans,... the other republicans come away sounding like liberals....

If the republicans get anything from the last election it should be that given a choice between a moderate democrat and a liberal Republican,...most choose the Democrat....

When the choice was between a liberal democrat and a conservative Republican....the seat remained Republican....

It would be a rather ironic little twist of fate if the next American President's middle name was Hussein now wouldn't it?
