Poll Finds Tea Party Backers Wealthier and More Educated

By KATE ZERNIKE and MEGAN THEE-BRENAN

New York Times

Tea Party supporters are wealthier and more well-educated than the general public, and are no more or less afraid of falling into a lower socioeconomic class, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The 18 percent of Americans who identify themselves as Tea Party supporters tend to be Republican, white, male, married and older than 45.

They hold more conservative views on a range of issues than Republicans generally. They are also more likely to describe themselves as "very conservative" and President Obama as "very liberal."

And while most Republicans say they are "dissatisfied" with Washington, Tea Party supporters are more likely to classify themselves as "angry."

The Tea Party movement burst onto the scene a year ago in protest of the economic stimulus package, and its supporters have vowed to purge the Republican Party of officials they consider not sufficiently conservative and to block the Democratic agenda on the economy, the environment and health care. But the demographics and attitudes of those in the movement have been known largely anecdotally. The Times/CBS poll offers a detailed look at the profile and attitudes of those supporters.

Their responses are like the general public's in many ways. Most describe the amount they paid in taxes this year as "fair." Most send their children to public schools. A plurality do not think Sarah Palin is qualified to be president, and, despite their push for smaller government, they think that Social Security and Medicare are worth the cost to taxpayers. They actually are just as likely as Americans as a whole to have returned their census forms, though some conservative leaders have urged a boycott.

Romney wins Illinois primary, gears up for Louisiana

(CNN) -- With a decisive win in the Illinois presidential primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney sets his sights on the bayou where Louisiana holds the next Republican primary.

"We thank the people of Illinois for this extraordinary victory," Romney told supporters in the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg. "Elections are about choices. Today, hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois joined millions of people in this country in this cause."

With 99% of precincts reporting, Romney led former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum by a 47%-to-35% margin. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was running third at 9%, while former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had 8%.

Some people just don't want to talk about this  or acknowledge

That's a good article While I am not a tea party menber, I support the tea party people. They are more responsible, more realistic more patriotic, and probably smarter.

Now someone should write a profile on those who bash the tea party.
They are less self reliant, less likely to think and reason for themselves, they are more selfish, and self centered, they expect someone else to help them, and their patriotism is only skin deep.

Excellent description Clarencen :D :D :D :D

Except you left out hypocritical egotistical opinionated and have a tendancy to speak with a forked tongue   to make themselves look more important ....
But that does not describe anyone on here , does it????

EH??

so what you are saying is in a liberal state like Illinois Romney lost 52% of the vote... ?

Lets look at the broad picture... Of all the candidates running more than 50% say they are voting for Obama over any of those other candidates--- and of the 40+% left- over half of them are supporting Romney, the more moderate candidate....So that leaves only somewhere around 20-25% (or less when you remove the Libertarians that support Paul or like me will the Libertarian candidate ) that actually support the far right wing conservative (teaparty type) candidates....
Which definitely means the far right wing and teaparty folks are a minority...

Lets look at a broader picture oldtimer. when it is all said and done no matter who the Conservative candidate is if all obama has is 50% of the vote that means basically the other candidate will have 50% of the votes and considering there will be no Libertarian candidate so you will have more of them switching to the Conservative (excepting YOU) your knees will be sore from being on the losing side trying to suck up! :D

Oldtimer, forget about statistics, political correctness, and all that other nonsense. Don't worry about what the other guy might do. Use your heart and your conscience, and vote for what is right when you go to the polls. You come from a rural area where there should be some common sense still left. Use wisely the portion you were given.

And that is what I will do if the Libertarians nominate Gary Johnson as their candidate.... He is the only candidate running that is truly fiscally conservative that also wants to stay out of peoples business, bedrooms, and private lives.....

Why would you vote for someone who wants to stay out of all the things you are so interested in???

So how is this possible, ot says he wants a fiscal conservative yet he supports obama over any of the Rep candidates that are definitely more conservative than obama. Then he brags up Romney who is the least fiscaly conservative of all the Rep candidates.

It doesn't add up unless you bring the hypocrisy factor into the equation

When did I brag up Romney?
I just post his winning record here to show some of the slower folks of the site what the real flavor of this country is- which is more moderate, libertarian, and constitutionally protective on social issues than the far rightwingers, evangelicals, and teapartiers that follow the Rush, Newt, and Santorum type are...

Some might call it trolling, and honestly, it is getting very old indeed.
