Group Pleased that Senate Follows Tester’s Lead

to Halt Construction of Dangerous Disease Lab in Cattle Country

Billings, Mont. – R-CALF USA wishes to thank the U.S. Senate for passing an amendment introduced by Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., that halts construction of a research facility in Manhattan, Kan., to replace the well-known laboratory currently located at Plum Island, N.Y., which studies animal and livestock diseases, including the most highly contagious livestock disease known: foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

Tester’s amendment forces the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to research the site and study the potential effects of researching highly contagious animal diseases in the heart of cattle country, and also requires that the Department begin to establish a regional response plan in case there is an accidental release of FMD.

“In May 2008, the GAO (Government Accountability Office) released a very forceful report that concluded that Homeland Security lacked any evidence to show that FMD research on the mainland could be done safely, yet there are still certain parties out there who continue to blatantly disregard the economic disaster the U.S. cattle industry would suffer in the event of an accidental release,” said R-CALF USA President/Region VI Director Max Thornsberry, a Missouri veterinarian who chairs the group’s animal health committee.

“We appreciate Senator Tester’s understanding of the potential long-term ramifications if anything were to go wrong at a mainland lab and we’re proud that he can stand strong against those who support the relocation purely because of political considerations,” he continued.

“The Senator has indicated in his statements that the consequences of an inadvertent disease outbreak in any cattle-producing state would severely harm the very sectors of the U.S. economy and U.S. population that such a lab is supposed to protect: the U.S. livestock herd, red meat consumers, as well as the many U.S. cattle producers who strive to produce the healthiest cattle in the world so those consumers can enjoy a safe and secure food supply,” Thornsberry concluded.

“We can’t move the biggest disease threat to cattle right to the heart of cattle country without taking every precaution,” Tester said. “This is just common sense, and I’ll keep fighting to make sure the folks in Washington realize the potential impact moving the research lab could have on ranchers across this country.”

These people at Homeland Security that thought of this need to be weeded out of government. Such stupidity should not exist at such high levels of government that they would put this research facility right in the middle of cattle country.

What were they thinking?

Tester needs to go further than just stopping this lab and find out who is responsible for pushing this. They need to be investigated by the FBI along with the USDA and if there is any communication between them and any poultry or competing meats company, RICCO charges need to be filed.

Who is getting a cut in Kansas will be the one !!!

No, it isn't hard to figure these guys out at all, is it?

We have the best government money can buy and a whole lot of political appointees who have made it their business to distribute political spoils that work against the public interest.

These people are the domestic enemies the federal employees swear to protect us from but do not.

We need to make them honor their oath but our Congress has devolved into a spoils system. They will sell out anyone they can for their own gain.

It is a national disgrace.

You are right on this one, Porker--- just follow the money. It is so simple yet unobtainable by men of corrupt natures. Our country has become not a nation of laws, but of men. Men who have no philosophy deeper than doing what they can get away with.

Go after them, Senator Tester. Someone needs to put our country back on the right track. Allowing these people to fester in government hurts everyone. We need to shine sunlight on this cancer that has gripped our nation.
