Texas A & M Budget Cuts

Howdy from your President!

In recent months, I have visited with many of you about our budget situation and what the future holds. Dr. Karan Watson, our interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and other administrators have done the same. We continue to seek and appreciate your insights, opinions and ideas.

Despite the budget reductions that Texas A&M and other state universities and agencies have already taken for the current FY2010-2011 biennium, experts predict that the state could face a budget shortfall of anywhere from $11 billion to $18 billion for the upcoming FY2012-2013 biennium when the 82nd Legislature convenes in January 2011.

This is due to several factors, including lower tax revenues, uncertain federal funds, increasing enrollments at all levels of public education and other demands on the state budget. The Legislature must address these issues when it convenes since the Texas Constitution requires the State to balance its budget.

In anticipation of this revenue shortfall, the Legislative Budget Board in late May asked Texas A&M and other state universities and agencies to develop a plan for a second budget reduction of 10 percent, in 5 percent increments, for the upcoming FY2012-2013 biennium which begins September 1, 2011.

Education is a mess.

Our local private school spends just over $3,000.00 per year per student, per year on education and does a danged good job. 1-12 grades.

On the other hand....

The local public school spends $8,900.00 per student, per year for grades K thru 5.

When anyone gets that figured out please explain it to me?

Throwing money at education does not work.

And the attitude these kids have. :x My father
thought it was a privilege to go to school, now kids think
it's their RIGHT, or worse, they have no appreciation for
being able to attend school. What happened to our country?

Add up what the Feds. have spent on education, since they got involved, and see if they reached their goals yet.

It reminds me of the "war on poverty"

Here's a start, Mike:

When I visit a private school that teaches grades 8-12, I see no payground equipment for small children or a baby care room but I do see's lot's and lot's of money being spent on tuition and more for teachers. Also, I don't see a lot of sports facilities. In contrast, when I visit a publc Senior High School, I see a great deal playground equipment and also some facility in the building, w/ staff, to take care of and feed these small children. And, the sports facilites offered are grandiose as compared to private schools - baseball fields, football stadiums, tennis courts, soccor fields etc. Playgound equipment at a High School? Yes. Thanks to no child left behind, the high schoolers who get pregnant still have a right to a free education and because of this the taxpayer also gets to pay for the child care of their babies. Add to this the fact that the average public student has more programs and activities available than ever before and ithen t's not so hard to see why public education is so expensive.

That's not the case with our private school. They have all the sports facilities anyone could want..................
