Well, this is the weekend some have waited for all their lives. They have descended like flies to rotting meat, and they are everywhere you look. Birkenstocks with socks, below the knee denim skirts, and haven't shaved their legs or pits since Moses got the 10 Commandments. Video cameras and other image recording equipment draped across their heaving chests, you can spot them for what they are as far as you can see them.
For one weekend a year they come here and take over the town, and I think they have private contests to see who can spend the least amount of money locally. The business people grumble, and the kids laugh at them.
Who are these strange people? As us locals say, they are "Willa Cather NUTS"!!! Yes, this is the weekend of the Willa Catheter Spring Conference, where they all pay homage to a lesbian who wrote about the Plains. Just like their heroine, they don't do this town a penny's worth of good financially, except for the motel, and they usually have sack lunches provided by the Willa Catheter Museum and then their "banquet", which they get an out of towner to cater. I wonder if they know that Willa Catheter had PAID mourners attend her funeral in New York? That is a fact, as my Mom heard the call to certain friends of Willa's who lived here at the time, on the PARTY LINE!!
They are the cheapest bunch of screws to walk the face of the earth, and they think they are really something.
The only problem is, now that Jiggsy's 350 is dead, I don't know what he'll be driving, so I won't know if he's here or not for the "festivities"...
