That time of year

What passes for harvest in my neck of the woods is now in full swing. Today while out delivering I was constantly dodging combines, grain karts, pickups pulling headers, semis headed to the bin, and various support vehicles. It's nice to pop over a hill and see the entire road ahead of you blocked by various pieces of equipment that dwarf whatever you are driving. Got brakes? Approaching an intersection with tall corn on all 4 corners can also make your heart jump up into your throat.

A couple of weeks ago we lost a school bus driver and 2 kids, aged about 8 and 10 and also a semi driver hauling hay when they met at an intersection. One child was life flighted to Omaha but has since recovered enough to go home. This happened about 20 miles or so northeast of here, and all the victims were locals.

SLOW DOWN AND LIVE! The extra minute or 2 you save ain't worth it if you end up at room temperature.

In the words of Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (Hill St. Blues) : "Hey! HEY! Let's be careful out there!"

I agree wholeheartedly! The road conditions this year are bad and getting worse, nothing new with the amount of harvest traffic. Needless to say there is no shortage of dust. Farm machinery is not getting any smaller either...
In our area we will face the challenge of a potential record sugar beet crop, that will surpass one semi-load per acre. We raise over 25,000 acres in Box Butte county alone.
We do have more level terrain, but the dirt starts hanging toward evening, as everywhere I'm sure. One nice thing about our occasional breeze...
