The big threat to all producers

A question for those focused on COOL and throwing up the walls. Have you given any thought to putting the same amount of effort and money into fighting this and the concern of what a 5-10% REDUCTION in meat consumption would do? It seems that anytime some politician or fading Hollywood star starts to sense a career decline they are only too happy to add their voice with the PETAs of the world to get some free publicity while beef producers have to hire their spokespeople.

Global warming becomes animal-welfare issue
Animal-rights groups are attacking Al Gore because "you just can't be a meat-eating environmentalist." Gore has been seen as the darling of environmental groups since An Inconvenient Truth won an Oscar last spring. But groups such as PETA and the Humane Society of the United States say the most inconvenient truth of all is that raising animals for meat contributes more to global warming than all the sport utility vehicles combined. The groups point to a study published last November by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization that states that the livestock business generates more greenhouse-gas emissions than all forms of transportation combined.

The well-funded animal-rights groups have launched advertising campaigns to gain Gore's attention and that of other Americans. Matt A. Prescott, manager of PETA's vegan campaigns, told the New York Times his group plans to send billboard-toting trucks to the Colorado Convention Center in Denver when Gore lectures there on Oct. 2. The billboards will feature a cartoon image of Gore eating a drumstick next to the tagline: "Too Chicken to Go Vegetarian? Meat is the No. 1 Cause of Global Warming." The Times reports that "even tiny pro-veggie operations are starting to squeeze dollars out of their shoestring budgets to advertise the eating meat/global warming connection."— Greg Henderson, Drovers editor

Longcut, "A question for those focused on COOL and throwing up the walls"

Why do you consider the US labeling Canadian beef as "throwing up the walls", but Canada is labeling Chinese chicken and you don't seem to have the same position?

That must be a record Sandhusker. It only took the first reply for you to try try turn this into a Canadian or Chinese issue. You will have to play alone in your Sandbox as you seem to have have chased everyone else away. If anyone cares to comment on the Gore/Peta article and how Animal Rights target and influece beef production please feel free.

Well, you were understandably uncomfortable addressing your own hypcracy on that thread and I didn't feel like letting you hide from it. Don't worry, I'm going to keep that article handy for any time you try to call labeling "protectionist", "trade barrier" or any of that other nonsense.

OK, fine. Maybe I was quick to out you for being a hypocrite, I could of missed you condemning your government's actions as erecting a trade barrier and being protectionist. So, do you think your government is in line with those regulations or do you have issue with them?

Longcut, I have to admire PETA, and other organizations that have a strong purpose, for their ability to organize. Unlike the cattle producers of this country who refuse to organize and defeat such threats. Public officials care little about the opinions of individuals, but they do respect and give great consideration to the combined opinion of organized individuals.

You bet! We all know that society is run by those who show up and those who get the attention. Their is no more powerful group of producers than the farmers in France. Radical and outlandish at times but always willing to take a stand on anything that affects their livliehood. Without a doubt Peta and similar groups are well funded, won't be going away any time soon and I predict will only grow stronger. This will result in the demise of those who or are too quick to dismiss them. Thanks for reply Ben there are many of us who appreciate your posts.

Check out PETA, how many cattle producers know that PETA is one of the biggest stock holders in the Outback steak house chain, or why.

The talking heads on Lou Dobbs the other day said that the 2 groups that are the biggest threats to our US way of life are George Soros' Open Society Institute and the Ford Foundation- both of which back a communist type of global government- and that both fund radical Muslim groups...

Oldtimer, this is the same George Soros that has entered into a working partnership with Cactus Feeders and Tyson. By the year 2010/2012, you will not recognize the cattle industry in the United States, as you know it today!

Cresud S.A.C.I.F. Y A.
Argentina
One of Argentina's largest landowners (with about 200,000 acres of land), Cresud raises beef and dairy cattle and cultivates grains, including corn, soybeans, sunflowers, and wheat. The company also farms and ranches on rental property. Cresud is in partnership with Cactus Feeders of Texas to raise cattle in feedlots rather than on pastures. Falling meat and milk prices have hurt the company's sales of late. Investor George Soros has reduced his stake in the company from 29% to about 11%. Alejandro Elzstain and Clarisa Lifsic own nearly 25%.
