Wave of violent crime intensifies in troubled New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New statistics show a crime wave is intensifying in a city already beset by the uncertainties of a flagging recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Despite an infusion of money and manpower into the justice system, the murder rate is growing and armed robbers are preying on Hispanic day laborers flush with cash from rebuilding jobs, the Police Department says.

The city, which led the nation in murders per capita in 2006, is on track to retain its title, according to data presented Thursday for April through June.

The report shows a 14 percent increase in murders and 44 percent leap in armed robberies for the first half of 2007 compared to the same period in 2006.

"It's obviously not good," said police Superintendent Warren Riley.

The National Guard is still patrolling ...............................

Just imagine how nice of a place it would be if the National Guard was not still there

44% increase in armed robberies 14% in murder. Just when we think they are the best they can be at what they do, they go and take it to the next level.

It's all really sad. It was never the ' safest' city on the planet, not by a long shot ....but it sure was FUN!!!!

A friend of mine was staying @ the Ritz downtown on a buisness trip and got robbed on his floor while going to his room in the hotel.

That means that the riff-raff is able to to just walk into anywhere un-noticed and prowl about.

It is sad, New Orleans was on my vacation to do list. I love Jazz and Cajun food. Me and wife always thought about going there once we quit taking kids on Vacations.

But now after all that has happened I took it off the list. I would not go there for safety reasons nor support such a place with financially!

Too bad, aplus. You're already having to support it financially - just like the rest of us.

What a waste of money - trying to save the pathetic forms of life(?) that inhabit that place. And the good old taxpayer has to keep pumping more and more money into it.

And for all of you liberals, the answer to your question is...

Hell, yes - I'd rather my tax money be spent on Fallujah than a mismanaged and corrupt "chocolate" shithole below sea level.

Texan do we not support all those folks who chose to live along coastlines and flood prone areas?
Yes, Frank - that's true to some extent. But there's a difference in most of those people and the welfare class of leaches in New Orleans, is there not? There certainly is in my mind.

Let's take Cameron Parish, Louisiana for example. (For those of you not familiar with Louisiana, they divide the state into parishes instead of counties.) Those people down there in that part of Louisiana are....different, is a nice way to put it. If you're not familiar with the area, at first glance, it would seem that 90% of them are riff-raff that would be content to spend their whole life drinking beer and fishing and/or riding around drinking beer and shooting at signs and mailboxes. Not completely true, though...

Cameron Parish was devastated by Hurricane Rita. Almost every business and home in the Parish destroyed - those that weren't destroyed were uninhabitable. No utility service remained. The little town of Holly Beach was...gone. Pretty much just...gone. Nobody could even get into the flattened town of Cameron. The whole Parish was basically a wasteland of salt water and debris.

There's a few cattlemen down there, but lots of cattle - the storm surge had most of those cattle either washed out into the Gulf or stranded on high spots in small groups. First priority for many of those cattlemen, after they took care of family and neighbors, was getting hay and fresh water to those cattle. They went right to work helping themselves, though. With no thoughts of waiting on FEMA to show up to help, or tell them what to do next.

In addition to a few cattlemen, the bulk of Cameron Parish consists of offshore oil & gas industry workers and commercial fishermen. Different than most of us, but in a way...not different. Hard working people that put family and neighbors first. People that know how to put in long hours to get the job done. Not too different from ranchers in that respect.

Not only were their homes destroyed, their workplaces were also destroyed. They not only had to rebuild their own homes - first, they had to rebuild the infrastructure that allowed them to produce income. They went right to work helping themselves, though. Sixteen hours on the job, then come home and work six or seven hours on their homes...before grabbing an hour or two nap and starting all over again. Seven days a week for weeks on end. With no whining and no thoughts of waiting on FEMA to show up with new travel trailers and prepaid VISA cards.

Did those people of Cameron Parish sit around with their hands out and whine for FEMA and the federal government to come save them? Nope - they pitched in and went to work helping their neighbors - and then helping themselves. Sure, they got some assistance in the end. But it was a pittance compared to the money that was sent into New Orleans to stop the whining from those bums that are born with their hand out. Bums that just happen to be the most politically correct color-of-the-day.

There's a big difference, Frank. Government should always help the people that comprise the government - the taxpayers that make it possible for government to function. The people that work to help themselves and their neighbors deserve all the help that we can give them.

But....it's way past time to stop giving to those that have lived their whole lives with their hand out.

Hunting and fishing sounds good, but I've been a registered Independent for 15 years. I've seen enough nonsense from both parties that I don't want to be associated with either one.

Lots of places to go besides the big easy.

Yea, figured I would just stop by and see Cypress to get that Cajun food. But then he has disappeared of late.
