Probe targets office of Conyers's wife

Detroit police are investigating the disappearance of thousands of dollars of city property that went missing from the office of former Detroit City Councilwoman Monica Conyers, wife of Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich).

Monica Conyers has not been charged with any wrongdoing, but City Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr. filed a formal request on Friday asking the police department to look into the whereabouts of missing electronic equipment, including laptop computers, digital cameras and printers, worth roughly $21,000.

The items disappeared when Conyers resigned her council seat on July 6 after pleading guilty to a federal bribery charge. She is awaiting sentencing and could face up to five years in prison and hefty fines.

A lawyer for Conyers, Steve Fishman, has insisted his client had nothing to do with the missing property, and the launch of the investigation sparked a war of words this weekend with Fishman accusing Cockrel in an interview with the Detroit Free Press of trying to score political points with his calls for the inquiry.

Cockrel responded that Fishman and Conyers have not been fully cooperating with the probe.

“There is absolutely no political motivation whatsoever,” Cockrel told the Free Press. “And if they are cooperating, why don't we have the missing equipment?”
