The Editing Of Huck Finn

In the new edition of Mark Twain's classic novel, "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" two words will be changed.

Publisher’s Weekly reports, “Twain scholar Alan Gribben and NewSouth Books plan to release a version of Huckleberry Finn, in a single volume with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, that does away with the "n" word...by replacing it with the word "slave." It'll mean a lot of editing - the "n" word appears more than 200 times in the novel.

The new edition will also replace the word "Injun" with "Indian."

The book has long been out of favor in schools and has increasingly been banned from school libraries across the nation.

Gribben’s told Publisher’s Weekly, "This is not an effort to render Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn colorblind … Race matters in these books. It's a matter of how you express that in the 21st century." He also says, "I'm hoping that people will welcome this new option, but I suspect that textual purists will be horrified.”

Maybe they should keep Chris Rock from having comedy TV shows?

I agree- that books/manuscript should not be changed/censored... It not only changes the original manuscript- but removes the attitude of the period of time...

As a history buff I love going back thru old manuscripts/records and always got a chuckle out of our old Jail books dated back starting in the 1880's -- and the descriptions of the prisoners: one footed Swede, Canadian halfbreed, pock marked halfbreed whore, German sympathizer, etc.,etc.,-- I wish I could remember them all....

The County Commissioners were cleaning house (to add more offices) and throwing out a lot of old records and paperwork- and gave me the old Jail logs- which I took home and after going thru them decided the local museum needed them to preserve that history....

why are we taking the word out of a classic book, when every black kid in the hood calls his buddy a nigger??

call me a racist if you want, but if a black can call a black a nigger, I can too....they want racial equality, then by God, what is ok for them is ok for me....I may even stat calling my buddies Cracker.

Last night on Hannity, Talk Radio Host Dr Laura was on and she said she is no longer on the radio because she said the N word on her show. She was making the exact same argument you are Jigs that if Blacks can call themselves the N word then why can't non black people use the word? The backlash to her stand was so bad she gave her show up and quit talk radio. OH and She was not fired as the left would have you believe as she was working for herself and just said enough is enough. The backlash came when a liberal woman was lieing about Dr Laura calling her personally the N word. If you listen to the tape of their conversation it plainly proves the woman lied, Dr Laura was making a general statement to prove her point. But it didn't matter to the liberal loons as they still targeted her Conservative Talk Radio Show. It just proves the Left will do anything it takes to shut down anyone that doesn't drink their PC Koolaid.

BTW Michelle Obama said the US was going to have to re-write their history so this should be no big surprise that the PC would target the N word first.

I find it the dumbest thing out there...they can say , so can I..that is what EQUAL is all about.

some of the black men I know, hate the word, don't use it, and feel the thugs in the hood who do, are the biggest disgrace thier is...

and i refrain from it when I can...but it is like the F word...it is there, and pops out at times....
