So has does it work that you donated the heifer and then have it at home to calve it? Did the kid that received the dontaion have it bred, show it, then bring it back to you to calve it out? And what is the sire of the calf?

I really think that heifer merit deal is cool. I'd like to see it here in our state associations.

well... its a long story. the young gal that received the heifer is a straight town kid that had a little makeshift pen on the outskirts of shelby. she originally took the heifer home and was feeding it there. i stopped to look one day and new it wasn't going to work so i offered to kick the girl out with my heifers that spring. then she took the heifer a few miles north of me to a friend that was doing some AI and he volunteered to get her AI bred at her place. then she went back out with my heifers and the young gal took her out a few times to show her but she never was in "show" condition. i told her just to focus on the economics behind the deal and forget trying to be competetive as far as the show deal. That calf is sired by this WLB Fresh bull up in canada. This young lady told me she wanted to breed the heifer to a polled bull "cause thats whats popular" - she explained. so i tried to find something that looked like it would work on a heifer and maybe be a little different. at first she had all kinds of fluff and puff polled yearling show bulls she wanted to ai to but i took a shot in the dark with this Fresh bull. i bought 5 doses of semen for her and told her we could run her out here on lease cause she don't have anything but a 12X12 pen for her at shelby. i've sure enjoyed the new friendship i wouldn't have made otherwise - but my own daughter does not even have a cow running on this place yet and this deal was more than what was bargained for but i feel like it is worth helping her do something she probably couldn't have otherwise - also she is going to vet school next year in North Dakota.... so maybe some day things will swing back around. what goes around comes around!

thats a clever plug for the breed :D

i got all kinds of them. the aha used to put out big posters with neat slogans. HEREFORD.... all things considered or the proud breed with the white face. i used to spout them off to all the guys around here that run nothing but black cattle and it didn't take very long for their whit to kick in.... the walk blindly (cancer eye) up to the top of the hill to calve during the snow storm and prolapse breed sticks out. My latest one is Hereford.... the tail twisting breed and i even rattled one of the other day loading bulls over at holden's - Hereford... won't get your teeth kicked out breed and Hereford.... its nice to not have to worry about being kicked breed. holden's hired man and i were trying to load 5 of their bulls down into the nose of the woolsey pot and both guys driving those trucks were behind the hired man and i while we were smack dab in the middle of those bulls trying to get them down there and i heard one of the truck drivers say "you would never be doing that loading bulls down at stevensons. i got a chuckle out of it anyhow.

You forgot about Hereford-the breed that fed the west. Or Hereford- making Longhorn palatable for over 100 years! Or Hereford- Here when Angus was just a rumor in Scotland!

Hereford 76, You have reaffirmed what I told my wife Sunday, after returning from pre-weighing the steers for the local county fair. "You have a hard time beating cattle people, they are just good folks"

It's a wonderful thing you are doing for that little gal, Hereford76.
Sometimes we never know how much we touch another persons
life, and sometimes we learn later how much it meant to them.
Anyway, it says a lot for that heifer to get moved around and still get
bred AI.

Our daughter had a polled Hereford heifer for 4-H and then as a cow
project. She was a nice cow and very gentle. She also had a Hereford steer as a 4-H project, that she called 'Buddy' that she rode, and when she took him to the fair weighing 1200#, all the kids rode him. I've got an
old picture somewhere that I'll try and scan.

Anyway, to you :tiphat:

i'd like to see that picture.

that reminds me of something i hear all the time. i spend a great deal of time visiting ranchers anytime i go somewhere and try to just feel them out on hereford bulls. most of the guys that are my generation and sometime guys a little older than me all seem to bring up a story about the last hereford bull they remember having on the place. it always goes something like this.... yeah - i got a picture of me as a kid after dad thru me up on the back of our old hereford bull.

Heck we had some friends over last weekend and she brought one of her friends from the city.. This gal from the city was showing pictures of her riding my friends hereford bull..It was a hoot. She is deemed now as a bull rider... :D We won't tell that the bull had a halter on and tied to the fence or the horse blanket on the bull so her pants wouldn't get dirty.. I loved it!! :D :D

Herf 76 what you have done for that gal is great. If more people would take an interest in someone who doesn't have the opportunity, there would be a lot more young people in agriculture. Hereford- HOW THE WEST WAS WON. That's probably my favorite.
