Trump passes Romney’s popular vote total, likely to break GOP record

With his five blowout wins Tuesday night, Donald Trump has passed Mitt Romney’s popular vote total from four years ago and is on a trajectory that could land him more Republican votes than any presidential candidate in modern history – by a lot.

Trump surged to 9.9 million votes, according to totals that include Tuesday’s preliminary results across the northeast and could rise further as the final votes are counted. That’s already more than 100,000 more than Romney earned in the entire 2012 primary season and tens of thousands more than John McCain earned in 2008.

Trump is certain to pass McCain’s total next week in Indiana, but more importantly, he’s positioned to easily pass the modern record-holder George W. Bush — who collected 10.8 million votes in 2000.

That presents an uncomfortable reality for anti-Trump forces: they’re attempting to thwart the candidate who is likely to win more Republican primary votes than any GOP contender in at least the last 36 years, and maybe ever.

In an email to POLITICO, University of Minnesota political science professor (and Smart Politics blogger) Eric Ostermeier noted that only eight candidates have won more than 7.5 million Republican primary votes since the advent of the modern primary and caucus system. Ronald Reagan won about 7.7 million votes in 1980, the fewest other than George W. Bush’s 7.6 million in 2004, when he didn’t face a primary challenge.

George H. W. Bush clocked in at 8.2 million votes in 1988 and 9.2 million in 1992, while Bob Dole earned 8.4 million in 1996.

General Election: Trump vs. Clinton Rasmussen Reports Clinton 38, Trump 38

This is one of the most accurate polls... The People are starting to speak.

They may be starting to speak, it's just too bad they really don't know what they're speaking about. Trumpanzees have sold themselves on the idea of what's popular. However, being popular doesn't make it right. Kinda like Hitler murdering 6 million Jews was popular at the time, but unfortunately for the Nazis, it wasn't right, no matter how they spun it.

Yep. I watched the hearings today. The Ice Director had every excuse conceivable to not arrest convicted illegals nor deport them.

Example: Crimes of rape against 6-10 year old girls were not classified into the worst offenses worthy of automatic deportation or incarceration.

Sickening. I watch the street thugs protesting Trump, and the "Make America Mexico Again" signs, and know that I want to be on the other side of that. Same as what happened in Chicago, etc...

Reading about the preaching of Cruz's "fundamental Christian" father is making me sort of wonder, as well. The media won't give Cruz a pass as Obama got with Rev. Wright....but God did tell Heidi to "run". I wonder if she took it wrong.

I don't know what to think about Rafael Cruz being on board with Castro in Cuba and even after he came to the U.S. He claims he didn't know Castro was Communist before and during his fundraising for him in Texas. But we do know he was anti-Batista.

That was quite a long time ago, but I recall that people thought Castro was a good guy, trying to help the people overcome the tyranny of the dictator at that time. Did Castro change, or was he communistic and hiding it to gain control?
Or were people just so desperate to have better rulers they didn't care what Castro was, so long as it was different than what they were living under?

it is not unlike today.... replacing one tyrant such as Obama who uses executive orders and memorandums to change laws..

Trump is the fix for his supporters,.. but do they really think a guy who made billions steamrolling over others,.. wouldn't use the office to do as he pleases?

If trump has any inkling of conservatism, which may be a big if, Cruz and Paul and those guys he ridiculed, are his best hope of getting anything done.

This looks pretty conservative to me. Certainly not where Hillary stands.

That's a good sign, but illustrates just how troubled times are when following the rule of law is conservatism.

I want trump to say, "most feared words in America, I'm from the govt and I'm here to help."

Or "government isn't the solution, it's the probl"
