Barack Obama, the World's Greatest Orator (™all news organisations), didn't exactly cover himself in glory when the BBC's political editor Nick Robinson asked him a question about who was to blame for the financial crisis. Normally word perfect, Obama ummed, ahed and waffled for the best part of two and a half minutes. Here, John Crace decodes what he was really thinking ...

Nick Robinson: "A question for you both, if I may. The prime minister has repeatedly blamed the United States of America for causing this crisis. France and Germany both blame Britain and America for causing this crisis. Who is right? And isn't the debate about that at the heart of the debate about what to do now?" Brown immediately swivels to leave Obama in pole position. There is a four-second delay before Obama starts speaking [THANKS FOR NOTHING, GORDY BABY. REMIND ME TO HANG YOU OUT TO DRY ONE DAY.] Barack Obama: "I, I, would say that, er ... pause [I HAVEN'T A CLUE] ... if you look at ... pause [WHO IS THIS NICK ROBINSON JERK?] ... the, the sources of this crisis ... pause [JUST KEEP GOING, BUDDY] ... the United States certainly has some accounting to do with respect to . . . pause [I'M IN WAY TOO DEEP HERE] ... a regulatory system that was inadequate to the massive changes that have taken place in the global financial system ... pause, close eyes [THIS IS GOING TO GO DOWN LIKE A CROCK OF **** BACK HOME. HELP]. I think what is also true is that ... pause [I WANT NICK ROBINSON TO DISAPPEAR] ... here in Great Britain ... pause [****, GORDY'S THE HOST, DON'T LAND HIM IN IT] ... here in continental Europe ... pause [DAMN IT, BLAME EVERYONE.] ... around the world. We were seeing the same mismatch between the regulatory regimes that were in place and er ... pause [I'VE LOST MY TRAIN OF THOUGHT AGAIN] ... the highly integrated, er, global capital markets that have emerged ... pause [I'M REALLY WINGING IT NOW]. So at this point, I'm less interested in ... pause [YOU] ... identifying blame than fixing the problem. I think we've taken some very aggressive steps in the United States to do so, not just responding to the immediate crisis, ensuring banks are adequately capitalised, er, dealing with the enormous, er ... pause [WHY DIDN'T I QUIT WHILE I WAS AHEAD?] ... drop-off in demand and contraction that has taken place. More importantly, for the long term, making sure that we've got a set of, er, er, regulations that are up to the task, er, and that includes, er, a number that will be discussed at this summit. I think there's a lot of convergence between all the parties involved about the need, for example, to focus not on the legal form that a particular financial product takes or the institution it emerges from, but rather what's the risk involved, what's the function of this product and how do we regulate that adequately, much more effective coordination, er, between countries so we can, er, anticipate the risks that are involved there. Dealing with the, er, problem of derivatives markets, making sure we have set up systems, er, that can reduce some of the risks there. So, I actually think ... pause [FANTASTIC. I'VE LOST EVERYONE, INCLUDING MYSELF] ... there's enormous consensus that has emerged in terms of what we need to do now and, er ... pause [I'M OUTTA HERE. TIME FOR THE USUAL CLOSING BOLLOCKS] ... I'm a great believer in looking forwards than looking backwards.

Obama is a great speaker with prepared material. You're right Mrs. G, when he was in Canada it was painful. Harper made him look like a school boy. Of course, Harper is never at a loss for words, and in my opinion is one of the best debators / impromptu speakers I have ever heard.

Its funny I had never really noticed what a great speaker Harper was until Obama spoke after him. He is, for sure excellent. I guess as time goes Obama's confidence will grow and written speeches won't be as relied on :) Unfortunatly bumbling through topics doesn't make him look to educated. I like the guy,so all hes doing is fueling the fires for those who don't!

Funny all I wanted to do was stick my finger under his chin and push up as he stood looking at Harper speak will his month open. I could just imagine what was going through his mind.

Thank God I'm not the leader of this country, I would have to speak two official languages and I can't even handle one and keep my thoughts straight.

I was so proud of Harper.

What is fueling the fire for those that don't like him is the fact that when he does speak, pre written or not good or bad you can't trust he is going to live up to it.

No lobbyists
No earmarks
Honesty
Accountability
Change
No signing bills without 5 days review

The list gets longer every time he speaks.

Unlike you Tam I don't hate Obama,I've never automatically hated anybody in my life, prob never really disliked anyone because I can't think of one single person I've ever had that feeling for. I don't think Obama's the Anti-Christ,the Messiah, nor am I starstruck by him.Unlike others I believe he's a Christian not a Muslim, maybe I'm wrong but like BC,I go with my gut feeling. The guys only been officially in office just over 60 days and hasn't done ONE thing right in some of you guys books. I remember any time there was a negative said about Bush, people were jumped and said you may not like him but he's still your president!!!!Looks like that only goes one way.

Do I feel hes doing all the right things....nope,I think the spending's crazy but I guess the US just runs the money press 24 hrs a day now. I'm not thrilled about his Coal plans...hubby's job off the place depends on that! Gun laws, well I don't believe strict guns laws help at all to reduce crime,so guess thats out the window.

The Guy walked into the financial mess,he PERSONALLY didn't make it and he's trying, right way or not to help his country out of it. I believe he's just a man, nothing more, nothing less. A break wouldn't hurt cause the hatred is getting really tiring and you guys should know cause all you do is complain about OT's dislike of Bush....

Debating the issues is one thing, personal dislike of a human being is another.

False. I had no reason to dislike him, I didn't know anything about him, never even had heard of him.

MG, the man lies and lies and lies! Tam just listed a few, can you even match that number with Bush or Reagan lies? (notice I didn't toss Bill in there).

Ok Mrs Greg Lets debate, I'll post some questions and my answers and you respond and tell me why I should trust Obama OK

1.Did Obama campaign by saying NO room for lobbyist in his Administration? Yes or No
Yes

4. How many earmarks was in the last spending bill he signed?
9000

5. Why did he sign it and where did he sign it and why?
He Signed it because it was what he wanted
He signed it in his office
Why because he know it contained 9000 earmarks that he promised he would NOT allow in.

6. Did he campaign on Honestry? Yes or No
Yes

7.How many Known Tax Cheats has he appointed to his Administration?
Last count I think was seven appointed not all were seated but the Sec of Treasury who heads the IRS was one of the appointed that was seated.
8.Did he campaign on accountability? Yes or No
Yes

9. Did he tell the Public he signed a bill that protected the AIG bonuses while he was showing OUTRAGE? Why
NO why I doubt he knew what he had signed. Nobody else seem to know what was in it

10. Did he campaign on Change? Yes or No
Yes

11. How many of the Clinton's Administration were appointed to his Administration?
To many to count but the big one is Hillary Clinton Wife of the guy that has taken hugh donations from Foreign government leaders for his charity, and he himself (Obama) called a liar during the campaign according to some news reports, as Sec. of State. NOW that's real change you can believe in isn't it?

12. Did he campaign on no bills being signed without a 5 day grace? Yes or No
YES

13. How long did it take him to sign the first bill the Congress passed and the second and the third?
first one 5 hours what happen to 5 days?
second 4 days and he didn't sign it in Washington no he wasted $ on jet fuel to fly to Colorado to sign it.
third was again a couple days but this one he signed in his office because he knew what was in this bill that he said would not be in it. 9000 earmarks.

He KEEPS saying he INHERITED the Economy from Bush

14. Who forced the Sub Prime on Fanny and Freddy?
The Clinton Administration another Democrat Administration

15. Who sued Citibank to force them to make risky loans?
OBAMA according to news reports.

The Democrats lead by Barney Frank.

Democrats his own party

19. Is it not the President of the US's job to keep US citizens safe from harm? yes or no
YES

20. Will releasing Gitmo detainees and giving them US welfare tax dollars into the US be safe for US citizens?
NO if just one of them is like the other 61 detainees that were released and returned to the battle field to kill US soldiers then you don't want them in the US.

21. The US has immigration laws but yet Obama's aunt has been exported twice and she is still living in the US why hasn't the President of the US made sure US laws are followed when it comes to his OWN FAMILY?
This one I will leave up to you to answer as I have no idea why their are two sets of rules when it comes to Obama.

22. US citizens pay taxes and when they fail to pay them they face prison so why is Tim Geithner sitting in Obama's Administration?
Again I'll leave this one up to you as again I think it has something to do with the two sets of rules when it comes to Obama.

223. Why is Dashle still walking the streets?
Refer back to answer number 20 and 21.

When you can come up with some reasonable answers to explain Obama's actions on these issues I'll think about giving him a BREAK until then I will reserve my right to dislike him and what he is doing.

I have never said I supported Bush's spending but what I did support is his stand on keeping the war on terrorism off US Soil. And you know the old saying what happens in the US doesn't stay in the US, that means North American soil, of which I live. So I guess I thank him for keeping me safe right along with my Southern neighbors. And if that meant a little discomfort within reason to someone that would likely cut a US soldiers head off as look at him then so be it. Terrorist don't play by rules and when you are forced to play with kid gloves instead of a iron fist you can bet they will bite your hand off if they are given the slightest chance.

This is another reason Obama scares me he is showing a weak side and I pray the terrorist don't take their opportunity to teach him a lesson.
