They're featuring this "road to nowhere" on the tv news tonight...What Pork...A road where no one lives- and no one goes too...The mayor said he and the news correspondents probably were the only ones using the road as they walked along it.....And they kept building it long after they knew the bridge was not going to be built...Just now finishing it
All the locals call it a sad joke- and even Palins former gubernatorial campaign chairman says the locals laugh about "the road to nowhere".... A $26 million dollar joke on the US taxpayers...

More neocon Fiscal Conservatism :(

Sarah Palin said yes, thanks, to a road to nowhere in Alaska

By Erika Hayasaki, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 19, 2008
GRAVINA ISLAND, ALASKA -- The 3.2-mile-long partially paved "road to nowhere" meanders from a small international airport on Gravina Island, home to 50 people, ending in a cul-de-sac close to a beach.

Crews are working to finish it. But no one knows when anyone will need to drive it.

That's because the $26-million road was designed to connect to the $398-million Gravina Island Bridge, more infamously known as the "bridge to nowhere." Alaskan officials thought federal money would pay for the bridge, but Gov. Sarah Palin killed the project after it was ridiculed and Congress rescinded the money. Plans for the road moved forward anyway.

Some residents of Ketchikan -- a city of 8,000 on a neighboring island where the bridge was to end -- see the road as a symbol of wasteful spending that Palin could have curtailed. Some of them even accuse her of deception.

"Surely we won't have to commute on the highway if there won't be a bridge," said Jill Jacob, who has been writing and calling the governor's office for the last two years to protest the road. "It's a dead-end highway, a dead-end road."

Since Palin was named the Republican vice presidential nominee two weeks ago, she has been boasting that she told Congress that Alaska didn't want the hundreds of millions that had been earmarked for the bridge.

But in 2006, Palin stood before residents in this region during her gubernatorial campaign and expressed support for the bridge. It became apparent after she was elected that the state's portion would be too costly, and Palin ordered transportation officials to abandon the project.

She held on to the $223 million in federally earmarked funds for other uses, such as the Gravina road, approved by her predecessor.

"Here's my question," said Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein. "If Sarah Palin is not being truthful on an issue like the Gravina bridge project, what else is she not being truthful about?"

Alaska transportation officials say construction of the road began in June 2007 because the state was still hoping to build a bridge, and "you need that highway access," said Roger Wetherell, a department spokesman.

But Weinstein, who backed the bridge project, said that Palin should have redirected the money. "If the bridge was canceled, give the money back, or get the earmark removed, or redesign the road so it's better for development," he said. "Especially if you're opposed to earmarks, and now you're telling the world you're opposed to earmarks."

His frustration came to a head after he heard Republican presidential nominee John McCain and Palin tout her reputation as a reformer focused on saving taxpayer money. He didn't feel much better when a campaign ad called them "the original mavericks," and said: "She stopped the 'bridge to nowhere.' "

Weinstein need only glance across the salmon-rich waters separating his city from Gravina Island to see what he believes are millions of dollars being spent unnecessarily. Why, he asks, didn't she stop that?

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-na-bridge19-2008sep19,0,5316609.story

Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein said the 3.2-mile road will be useful for road races, hunters and possibly future development. But with no bridge to serve it, that's probably about it.

"I think it will be good for recreational things like a 5K and a 10K," Weinstein said. "And instead of people walking through brush, it may be used for hunting in the area."

More tidbits that don't fit with what McBusch/Sister Sarah are saying:

McCain's Top Staffers Were Paid by Freddie Mac until Last Month

An article in Newsweek has now revealed that McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, was receiving monthly $15,000 checks until last month from Freddie Mac, the mortgage agency that the government recently took over. In addition, the head of McCain's transition team, William Timmons, Sr., was a registered lobbyist for Freddie Mac until this month according to an article on Bloomberg News. His firm received $260,000 this year for unspecified work.
Although McCain likes to rail against lobbyists and how he will put them in their place, having his campaign being run by people who lobbied for Freddie Mac cuts to the heart of his pitch as a reformer. This story is soon going to be all over the place (see for example, Newsday, the NY Times, and Roll Call).

The REST OF THE STORY that the libs don't mention is that Palin still has hopes that a sensable bridge will still be built. The reason is that the Ketchican airport handles an average of 50 flights a day and the only link between the airport and Ketchikan is a 7 minute ferry ride on one of two ferrys- and ferrys aren't exactly cheap to operate. They've got them taking off every 15 minutes. A bridge makes sense. They never mention this part, but somehow they feel the need to mention that only 50 people live on the island.

So then she's not telling the truth when she said she's against the Bridge to Nowhere :???:
Which first she was for- then when it became politically incorrect was against- which you now say she is really for

Her and old Flipper will get along just fine- as he "evolves" daily on his positions depending upon the group he is pandering to.....

Noooooooooo. She is for A bridge because the need is obvious. She turned against THAT project when it turned into such boondoggle and the estimated costs kept going up and up until it couldn't be justified.

So now you/she thinks costs will be cheaper :???:

All sounds like unneeded PORK to me..Especially the road that no one even uses- and may never....Why build it- if you may not ever get the bridge :???:

More Fiscal Conservatism :( :(

My word Oldtimer, you seem to be absolutely consumed with hatred for anything outside the Liberal box. Give it a rest before you have a stroke. You alone give the New Your Times a full days reporting on the political page. Surely you aren't naive enough to believe GWB has done this all by himself without the help of a Democrat controlled congress. Mr. McCain and Sara Palin surely can't do any worse. At least they both have a degree of experience which is more than you can say for Mr. Obama! And since you are so locked in on Sara Palin, have you listened to the news reports of Mr. Biden's statement about FDR and his speech on the TV before FDR was even president and before TV was invented? Kind of reminds me of Algore and his marvelous invention.....the internet.

Big Hill- most of this started long before a Democrat controlled Congress- the reason I could see this coming for years- and am just having a ball saying I TOLD YOU SO to what this current neocon Republicanism would do to this country...

Lou Dobbs 4 years ago was saying that a High School economics student could see that a country where the population is living on wild unregulated credit and their government is living on wild unregulated credit- while they ship industry and jobs overseas, while importing a new semislave labor force- can't end up any way except with economic disaster...

The bridge to Gravina Island will be built one day. They really do need it.

Juneau is the capitol and busting out of it seams because it is nestled between mountains and has no where else to grow except this island where the airport stands.

The ferry(s) there transport somewhere around 350-400,000 passengers across each year and the cost is around $6-$8.00 per trip, and that inhibits the mass building of homes upon the island.

The reason for the high cost to build the bridge is that it must be as long as the Golden Gate, and must still be high enough to accomodate the frequent LARGE cruise ships through the channel.

The media blew this out of proportion when they heard that only 50 people live on the island, but they forgot to tell everyone that the state capital's airport is on it. Let's not forget that you can't drive from Juneau to anywhere. You must take a boat or plane.

I say build the bridge, make it a toll bridge, and let the area expand it's population. Either that, or move the capitol to Anchorage or Fairbanks, which will cost more money in the long run.

If OT wants to continue to argue about some bridge that he knows absolutely nothing about, let him..........but let him continue to argue with himself.

You can't talk to Oldtimer. He's loving the problems facing our country even if it takes his last dime away from him. His brain has one of those "bridges to no where" lost somewhere in it.

WOW!!!!!...those Alaska people really are smart then....put a state capital smack dab in an area where " you can't get there from here" is true!!!!

Yeah, the very style of thinking we need now.

This is a prime example of the liberal press that isn't supposed to exist. This "reporter" felt that 50 people living on the island contributed to the story but running two ferrys back and forth all day to the area's major airport didn't?

You see this type of crap day after day after day. You want a story on corruption? Why haven't we heard anything about the details of the Obama/Rezko land deal? Why doesn't anybody find out the depth of the Obama/Ayers relationship? Why are they inventing stories when there are stories begging to be told?

Because there's N-O-T-H-I-N-G there to report on.....it's been investigated and it's OVER. Get over it and move on.

Man, I bet you were a stalker way back when you were dating....just couldn't take the word " NO" to heart.

Nothing to report on? On the same day, from the same land owner, Obama pays $300,000 less than asking and Rezko pays full price? Obama is a government figure that is key to getting funding for government project, Rezko made his living on government housing projects and is now in prison for fraud and there isn't anything to report on?

William Ayers is an unrepentant domestic terrorist who's case was tossed out only because the prosecuter screwed up, and Obama is buddying up to him but there is no story there?

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Don't forget that you couldn't drive to Alaska from the U.S. or Canada until after WWII. It is that remote. I drove to Anchorage in 1976 from here and the road (AlCan Hwy) was still dirt.

Has nothing to do with "Now".

It was made the capitol/goverment center in 1906 before the auto anyway.

It was settled in the 1880's from a Gold Rush and the area is still mined.

They need that bridge, and it will be built one day.

Well ,...............since you spend so much time on this web site and NOT being a banker....you prob are not used to doing deals that are BIG or where the numbers happen to have ' commas' in them.

But really, BIG business with big numbers happens every day....in the real world...it really does,I promise.

And on the Ayers guys, if the court tossed the case, apparently they didn't seen any reason to go on harping about it......

And this Rezko guy is already doing his sentence....he was found guilty on some aspects and is paying his price for that.

IT'S OVER!!

In August 2005 the 2005 Highway Bill provided for $223m to build the Gravina Island Bridge between Gravina Island and nearby Ketchikan. The subsidies were negotiated by Alaska's Rep. Don Young. This bridge had been nicknamed "the Bridge to Nowhere" by its critics. However, in September 2007, Governor Sarah Palin, who had previously supported the project, canceled it while directing the state transportation department to find the most "fiscally responsible" alternative for access to the airport. The federal government transferred the funds to the state to use at their discretion for road projects. [3] (Now don't forget this was a democrat dominated congress that gave them the money to use at their discretion).

Tell me what you know about the secondary market? I was in banking for 20 years. Perhaps you'd like me to PM you a quick memo on how to originate, qualify, process, close, package and sell a pool of loans.

I fight out in the open....for all to see!! I don't run and snitch like so many here do.
