There goes the Ranch

all things being equal you should also breed what you like.. I had a prof in school who made that point 10 years ago to me... If you are not breeding the type of animal you personally like than you will never be as successful as you could be because if you are not 100% into what you are doing you will have some struggles that could be avoided. Now, I am sure there are limits to this (I'm pretty sure Watsui for example would take a big beating in the pricing around here) but when it comes to the color of the hide... I don't know, but I do know my red hided/rwf animals outsold my soild blacks this fall on a pound per pound basis. And I also know I find those red hides to be awful pretty on a nice green pasture... And the place with white parks looked darn pretty too... Oh well, all that really maters to me is the animal under the hide.

It DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THEY LOOK ON THE OUTSIDE, they all look the same hanging. That's what's retaining ownership is mostly all about...you get carcass data on your cattle. HOWEVER, you can join up with a branded beef program, they will get the carcass data for you, but it will cost you so much per head.

greg likes the roan calves. its like people breeding black cattle. If he likes them, they work for him, and they taste good, why not?
Lol .Thanks Angus, you hit it right on the button. You my man are a good kid!!

Knowledge is power-it's amazing how much easier it is to bargain when you know how your cattle will feed and what kind of carcass they will hang. Don't let the auction mart pimps pull your chain they say whatever they think will get your cattle to their yard.

You said a mouthful there Northern.

Everyone should be required to finish some of their own calves at least once just to see how it works.

There's no excuse not too-if a peasant like me can get it done anybody should. Most yards will advance you some money up front-finance your feed or share a pen with you to get you started. I think most people would be pleasantly surprised at how their cattle perform.

Every year we finish about 6 steers but only on grass. We believe, and many others agree, that our cattle don't need to be fed grain to finish. We feedlot our calves until May of their yrling yr and then all they ever see again is grass. Some people say that there is no difference and some say that you won't get the flavor on grass that you'll get with grain. I seriously invite anyone out to have a steak with me. Our butcher in town couldn't believe it either.

For Red Angus "heifer bulls" talk to Bruce and Teena Ketchum South of Baker at Milk Creek Reds.

Then you can try the Roberts' at Miles City. They have some of the early '90's Julians that are exceptionally good calving ease cattle.

I don't want to post numbers here w/o permission, but you should be able to find them yourself at the RAAA site, but doing a member search.

Badlands.

I have never seen Roberts cattle before, but I really like Bruce's. I have gone through their cattle a couple times, and really like their cows. They may not have as much feedlot perfomance as some, but I think they are in the top 3 in the country for the best cows in the breed. I actually bought a top maternal/heifer bull from them last year and we are just starting to get calves from him now. I am real excited about his daughters. To top it off, you aren't going to find any better people either. Bruce and Tina are definetely 1st class.
