Canadian, British, U.S. vessels foil pirates in Gulf of Aden
Last Updated: Sunday, April 19, 2009 | 10:36 AM ET Comments213Recommend89CBC News
A Canadian warship helped thwart a pirate attack as part of the NATO mission to keep vessels safely moving in the Gulf of Aden, officials said Sunday.

HMCS Winnipeg responded Saturday night after seven pirates from Somalia approached a Norwegian-flagged tanker, NATO officials said.

The pirates' skiff fled after the crew of the MV Front Ardenne took evasive manoeuvres and alerted warships in the area, they said.

Cmdr. Chris Davies of NATO's maritime headquarters in England said the pirates then sailed into the path of HMCS Winnipeg, which was escorting a World Food Program delivery ship through the waterway.

The American warship USS Halyburton and a British naval supply ship joined the Winnipeg in what became a seven-hour chase in the dark.

The two warships dispatched helicopters to keep track of the bandits and fired warning shots to stop them, Fernandes said. The pirates stopped, but not before dumping most of their weapons overboard.

The Canadian ship sent a boarding party to search the skiff and found a rocket-propelled grenade, said HMCS Winnipeg spokesman Michael McWhinnie.

Crew members interrogated, disarmed and released the pirates, he said.

Clinton announces plan to seize assets to thwart rise of piracy

Effort to track and freeze pirate assets will may be difficult to implement, say officials

US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said yesterday the Obama administration will take the unusual step of trying to seize the financial assets and property of pirates while working with shippers to thwart hijackers off the coast of Somalia.

Seizing their assets is a great idea. I'm all for it. Seize it, make sure it's full of pirates, and sink it.
I don't care if these guys are hungry and or desperate. Rights right and wrongs wrong. You become a pirate, you pay the price.

Kind of reminds me of Gitmo, what is going to happen when one of these "released" creators of "man-made disasters", comes back another day when there are no Navy present to protect "infidels"

And still they continue to play politics and not allow vessels to arm themselves, because that might be an admission of the ability of "law-abiding citizens" protecting themselves with guns, against criminals.

We don't agree on much, but I'm with you 100% on this one. Do they want to end piracy or not?

They let them go??!?!

now you are starting to understand the difference between the liberal promoted criminal / law enforcement appraoch and the conservative wanting to use a military action approach.

in the criminal approach.. the law offers little choices..

in the military approach we could at least have 'detained" them and even jailed them,.. and if the are hostile, they could have been fired upon.

or as kola said.
shoot them when they take a pizz

The Canadian Government is reporting that the Canadian Ship had to let the Somalian national pirates go because they did not do any actions against Canadian owned interests or Canadian citizens...

The ship they were trying to hijack was Norwegian....

They've definitely got to sit down in these upcoming meetings and find a better way to handle jurisdiction and prosecution of these characters....

Maybe you can explain how the the "catch and release" policy on pirate/terrorists, is better then Bush's lock them up Gitmo policy?
