BILLINGS, Mont. June 11, 2012 (AP)

A man hitchhiking across the country and writing a memoir called "The Kindness of America" was injured in a random drive-by shooting along a rural highway near northeastern Montana's booming Bakken oil patch, authorities said Monday.

Ray Dolin, 39, of West Virginia, was shot in the arm as he approached a pickup Saturday evening thinking the driver was offering him a ride, said Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier.

The shooting took place just west of the town of Glasgow along U.S. Highway 2.

A 52-year-old Washington man, Lloyd Christopher Danielson III, was arrested about four hours later near Culbertson. Authorities say he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and apparently headed to Williston, N.D., for work tied to the oil boom.

The shooting follows another random attack earlier this year in which a 43-year-old teacher from nearby Sidney, Mont., was allegedly kidnapped and killed by two Colorado men on their way to the Bakken.

As the men await trial on charges stemming from Sherry Arnold's death, the case has stoked fears that a once-quiet corner of Montana has been irreversibly altered by the oil boom.

But Meier said Danielson's quick arrest by deputies in Roosevelt County 100 miles away from the shooting shows law enforcement is keeping up with any changes.

"We're still the wonderful people in Montana we've always been, and we'll get through this," Meier said. "Things are going to happen whether there's the Bakken or not."

Dolin was expected to recover and was being treated at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow. A nurse said Monday he was not taking calls or accepting messages.

Danielson was jailed in Roosevelt County on suspicion of felony assault with a weapon and driving under the influence. He was due to make an initial court appearance Monday.

It was unclear if he had an attorney representing him prior to his appearance.

Meier did not know if any words were exchanged between the alleged shooter and victim before Dolin was shot. He said they did not know one another.

"He was sitting down to have a little lunch and this guy drives up. He thought he was going to give him a ride and as he approached the vehicle, the guy pulls out his weapon and shoots him. It's as simple as that," Meier said.

Danielson's criminal history in Washington state includes intimidation and assault, Meier said. Details were not immediately available.

  Yep- or that he would publicize anything about nutty white folk running around misusing guns!!

Starting to sound like a bunch of NIMBY's... Just the cost that comes with having 2-4 % unemployment in the area- and lots of open jobs...The out of state riffraff comes with the good folks... We've had it before with several booms over the past 100 years- and survived them- we will again...

Hard for the KKK Grand Poobah to make anything racial out of this one- altho the Tribal Police were involved in locating the suspect... :p

If anyone doesn't grasp the irony in this, you are to be pitied:

Valley County Sheriff Reveals That Alleged Victim Shot Himself In Alleged Drive By Shooting

Friday, June 15th 2012

Valley County Sheriff Glenn Meier has revealed that after further investigation into that alleged drive by shooting west of Glasgow on June 9th, the alleged victim apparently shot himself in the arm and told authorities that he was the victim of a drive by shooting.

Sheriff Meier told Kltz/Klan that the alleged victim, Ray Dolin, confessed Thursday night that he did in fact shoot himself late in the afternoon of June 9th and claimed to authorities that a man in a maroon pickup pulled up to him as he was sitting by the road and shot him.

This led to a massive manhunt throughout the area and the arrest of a Washington state man who was charged with felony assault. That man, Christopher Lloyd Danielson, was released from Valley County custody on Thursday. Danielson still faces a DUI charge in Roosevelt County.

Sheriff Meier said that after an exhaustive investigation by the VCSO and the FBI, BATF and the BLM it was revealed that Dolin was was not the victim of a random shooting but in fact was the victim of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Dolin confessed to this fact Thursday evening.

Sheriff Meier said the investigation continues and at this point no charges have been filed against Ray Dolin but authorities are considering their next step in this case.

Authorities will hold a press conference on Monday at 10am and will release more details in this case.

Sounds like things haven't changed much with the nutty hitchhikers we get thru here in the summers... Had almost the same thing happen 25 years ago.. The sad thing is that the potential job seeker got tied into it for awhile until the facts were sorted out...

Wow this story was on the FIVE the other day when Liberal Bob Beckel used it as his One More Thing Piece. He was bashing backwater Montana for the shooting of a guy that was writing a book about the Good things in the US. The other four laughed at him and bet that the story would come out that the shooting was planned and it was done to get publicity for the so called victim's up coming book. They teased Bob that he took the bait and now it looks like he did.

This kid appears to have some mental/social issues from what I've read...

In the incident I had 25 years ago- the guy did it to get out of working and to be able to draw welfare/SSI... He didn't get that- but he did get an all expense paid vacation at Montana State Prison..

I guess you are right he had a mental problem if he shot himself to get welfare as all he would have had to do is vote for Demo0crat and I'm sure he would have been fast tracked to the social welfare rolls to guarantee his government dependence and future DEMOCRAT VOTES.
