China State Construction nets $100m US subway deal
By Liu Yiyu (China Daily)
Updated: 2009-11-24 08:11

China State Construction Engineering Corp, the largest contractor in China, has bagged a subway ventilation project worth about $100 million in New York's Manhattan area, marking the construction giant's third order in the United States' infrastructure space this year.

The contract was given to China Construction American Co, a subsidiary, the Wall Street Journal quoted a source as saying.

"The new project, along with the $410-million Hamilton Bridge project and a $1.7-billion entertainment project it won earlier this year, signals China State Construction's ambition to tap the American construction market," said Li Zhirui, an industry analyst at First Capital Securities.

Interesting.

A Chinese company has a subsidiary in the US of A - makes millions and probably sends most of it offshore to the parent.

At the same time the US of A military is ripping Canadian made and ALREADY INSTALLED piping - made in Canada from materials bought in Texas - out of buildings in a couple of military bases - because it has "Made In Canada" stamped on it.

Canada does over one billon dollars a day in trade with the US of A - making Canada the largest trading of the US of A. Trade problems between these two countries have far reaching effects on jobs in both countries.

Lay offs occurred at the primary supplier in Texas due to "buy American" whose biggest client is the Canadian manufacturer, and layoffs occurred in Canada due to "buy American" policy due to a reduction in manfufacturing caused by loss of American contracts - yet the US of A sends contracts to the Chinese.

Is this simply a way to pay down the debt to China? Or is it fiscal irresponsibility?

Makes a person shake their head sometimes.

do you suppose there are no american companies doing work around the world on foreign govt. contracts? a fair chunk of american foreign policy is to enable american companies to extend their activity and influence.

don, the stated purpose of the "stimulus" was to create jobs to help our economy. How is giving contracts to foreign companies consistant with that?

the canadian govt. does the same thing linking foreign aid with trade. the chinese probably just used some good ole american lobbyists to get those contracts.

If that Chinese company is employing Americans for the project, paying fair wages, and doing quality work at competitive prices, personally, I don´t see a problem.

maybe if China was giving US an aid package it would be understandable..

but with US borrowing money from them and sending it to them with interest.. it is irresponsible to also give them the work meant to stimulate our economy..

it sure does.. I would rather send money north to Canada any day then ship it over to China.. but then again I value friendship and common values more then a quick buck...

if the chinese are the low bidders and subcontracting american companies and hiring americans then they are contributing to efficiency and that's what n. american economies have not been. we are high cost and low creativity economies. by comparing the aid for trade thing i was just pointing out that american companies carry out contracts for foreign governments earning public money that could be used to more directly stimulate local economies.

Agreed. My former oil-services company worked in many countries around the world, often for state-run oil industries where the oil is public property. While I typically had at least one American or Brit on-site for quality control purposes, 99% of those employed were citizens of that particular country.

We never caught and flak for being an "outsider".
