This week in Christian History

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/thisweekinchristianhistory/

April 4, 397: Ambrose of Milan, an early church bishop, brings an emperor to his knees in repentance for the wrongs he committed - could that happen today?

April 4, 1068 - MLK is assassinated.

April 5, 1811 - a Sunday School is established and grows from nothing to over 1 million in 20 years. Someone had vision!

"April 6, 1249: Muslims take King Louis IX of France prisoner..."

April 7, 1199: "The King is dead. Long live the king..."

"April 8, 1857: A small group of Dutch immigrants, meeting in Zeeland, Michigan, organize the Christian Reformed Church."

"April 9, 1945: The Gestapo hangs German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer..."

"By words or thoughts or acts of will, we all leave our mark - for good or ill."

"April 13, 1742: Handel's famous oratorio Messiah premieres..."

"April 15, 1452: Italian painter and scholar Leonardo da Vinci is born in Florence, Italy. Among his most famous religious works are the Virgin of the Rocks, The Last Supper, and St. John the Baptist."

April 15, 1892: Dutch devotional writer Corrie ten Boom, known for hiding Jewish refugees in her home during World War II (an act dramatized in the 1971 film The Hiding Place) is born. She also died on this date in 1983."

April 16, 1521: German reformer Martin Luther..."Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me! Amen!..."

"By words or thoughts or acts of will, we all leave our mark - for good or ill."

When I read this earlier the name Corrie ten Boom struck a chord so at coffee I asked my Dad why I knew this name. Corrie was on a speaking tour and stayed with my Grandmother Burgess at Tilbury Ont. They corresponded for years and my Grandmother supported her mission work.

"April 21, 1109: Anselm, archbishop of Canterbury and one of the most profound thinkers of the Middle Ages, dies around age 76. He attained fame for his argument that faith is the precondition of knowledge ("credo ut intelligam"), his "satisfaction theory" of the atonement ("No one but one who is God-man can make the satisfaction by which man is saved") and for his ontological argument for God's existence."

Not all of us have the time or are called to develop such important credos as those mentioned above. However, those of us who are the accepting beneficiaries of the redemptive work of Christ do well to contemplate on, and better understand, the Divine providence that makes it possible for us to be called the sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father!

Are there some snippets of Christian history that caught your attention in this week's offering? If so, add them here. It would be very enlightening to see what others find of interest.

How about the fact that God carries on his work in spite of our human efforts.

April 17, 1937: With Mussolini's troops occupying Ethiopia, Sudan Interior Mission missionaries who had started a small church among the previously devil-worshiping Wallamo tribe are forced to leave the country. "We knew God was faithful," one missionary wrote. "But still we wondered—if we ever come back, what will we find?" The missionaries returned in July 1943 to find that, despite severe persecution by Italian soldiers, the Christian community had grown from 48 members to 18,000.

That one caught my attention as well. I shared that account in church this morning to illustrate the exact point that you made - we are part of the work, but the work is far greater than our contribution!

April 23,1968--i believe talks about the largest churches in America and the world.
the Churches here keep getting larger and larger with more and more music and social activities and fund raisers.
just leave'n an opinion again but i prefer the smaller country church with
some good old time preach'n.
noth'n like a good testimony about a sinner saved by grace.

I live in a small community of a bit over 2900 total population. Approximately 70% of the community is Catholic with mass daily and 3 masses on Sunday. Other than that we have one Church of Chrsit, Methodist, Brethren, Pentecostal but 11 Baptist Churches. That's spreading it a bit too thin.

those 11 Baptist gotta have fewer politics with smaller committee meetings.
By-laws can make out-laws out of in-laws in a small community like that.

I certainly don't understand it. Just seems when one bunch gets upset or disagrees on anything the move on and open up another church and the members just shuffle from one church to the otehr with an occasional diversion over to one of the nonbaptist churches just to see what's going on over there. But it seems to be that way in every town I pass thru.

A man had been shipwrecked all alone on an island for many years. Finally he was discovered. The rescuers saw three huts on the island and asked about them. The stranded man replied that one of the huts was his home, one was his church, and the other hut was the church he used to attend.

I'm back to Christian History, honestly, there are many huts that we can worship in.but,
Ephesians 4:4-7 the word 'one' is mentioned atleast 7 times in the KJV.

i wrote my last poem,"just him,a horse and a dog" based on these 4 verses.about a lonely cowboy who wished he had 'one' friend he could trust.
this Easter i will worship my Best Friend, regardless of the building i am in.

"April 26, 1992: Worshipers celebrate the first Russian Orthodox Easter in Moscow in 74 years."

You might ask - "So what?"

To me, this event demonstrates the unimpinged and impervious truth that there is no power on earth that can hold back the work of the Kingdom of Heaven. (The Communist Soviet Union utterly failed in its efforts to stamp out the faith.)

The greatest evidence of this that we have, we celebrate today - the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. All the power of Rome, the scheming religious leaders and the hatred of the common folk could not seal the tomb!

He is risen!

Ver true..but one of the "ones" is "One Unity" which no longer exists. Balestabber. Please share the poem with us. Would love to read it. Thanks.

TexasBred,u can click out of this page and go to the
"Horses n dogs" page,,then scroll down about 12 and it will be posted by me.i will post it again with the story.here it goes-----

back in the eighties i knew a man that was a convict and had spent some time in prison.he was a thief,,without any scruples or cares.he told me he wouldn't steal off his friends,so i said"i hope i'm one of your friends"
he looked me right in the eye and said "a man is lucky if he has one good friend in a lifetime---everyone else is an aquaintance---

fast forward 10 years,i had just accepted the Lord and was a new Christian,i was in church when a missionary quoted the same line.
"you're lucky to have one good friend in a lifetime--everyone else is an aquaintance--

so whether Convict or Christian these words inspired my poem.in church,in prison,or out on the range,,,there are lonely people who need a friend.you have a friend in Jesus,,u can trust.

here goes again-Just him,a Horse and a Dog-

He was all alone---just him,a horse and a dog
keep'n warm by a fire---as he sat on a log
wish'n he had a friend---he could depend on and trust
as he made his cattle drive---thru the soapweed and dust

the sounds of nature---oft he would hear
the howl of a yote---or the bleet of a deer
as he prepared his bed---to sleep under the stars
he thought of Jesus---the hands and the scars

then a voice from the heavens---began to speak
I am a friend ---of the lonely and weak
you can talk to me---while out on the trail
and when you have trouble---I have paid your bail

you can follow Me---as we make this drive
back to the ranch---thru the cactus I am alive
to hear your prayers---to cover your back
as you,the horse and the dog---bring up the slack.

I'm no expert at anything but that is BEAUTIFUL and POWERFUL. Hope you don't mind if I cut and paste it to an email to other friends and "aquaintences". Thanks for Sharing.

thank-you for your reply TexasBred, and u have my permission to share it.
i have been doing a study on the "one unity".
1Cor 12:12 ,,is one verse about the body having many parts but is one body--as in Christ.
in the Baptist world,if i'm not mistaken,it can refer to God,the Father, and the Holy spirit. i have had it explained to me like this:

if u light 3 independant Candles,u have 3 different flames.
now u can "unite" those 3 candles to make only "one flame"
thus representing God,the Father and the Spirit as one

sometimes called a triune God or Trinity.

very interesting study,thanks again.

Oh I agree with you 10% on that unity of the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit. Or as we proclaim in the "Gloria", "God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten not made, one in being with the Father...... The unity I was questioning how we could be one as Jesus prayed yet seem to split/divide over the least of differences. Sometimes it has nothing to do with doctrine...only practices. But unity is definitely something all Christians should pray for.
