Robert Mugabe Militia Hacks, Burns Alive Opposition Leader's Wife

The men who pulled up in three white pickup trucks were looking for Patson Chipiro, head of the Zimbabwean opposition party in Mhondoro district. His wife, Dadirai, told them he was in Harare but would be back later in the day, and the men departed.

An hour later they were back. They grabbed Dadirai Chipiro and chopped off one of her hands and both her feet. Then they threw her into her hut, locked the door and threw a petrol bomb through the window.

The killing last Friday — one of the most grotesque atrocities committed by Robert Mugabe’s regime since independence in 1980 — was carried out on a wave of worsening brutality before the run-off presidential elections in just over two weeks. It echoed the activities of Foday Sankoh, the rebel leader in the Sierra Leone civil war that ended in 2002, whose trade-mark was to chop off hands and feet.

About 70 local supporters of the Movement for Democratic Change supporters gathered Wednesday in Patson Chipiro’s small yard in Mhondoro to protect him.

Inside the hut where his wife of 29 years died, women sang softly to a subdued drum beat next to the cheap wooden coffin. The thatched roof had been destroyed in the fire so they sat under the open sky. The lid could not be closed because Dadirai Chipiro’s outstretched arm had burnt rigid. Her charred hand was found as women swept the hut.

Don't be so defensive of your candidate. This has nothing to do with the campaign.

I've watched African policies and politics since the days of Edie Amin.

He was my hero. When he wanted to get rid of a rival, he would just eat him.

I seriously wonder whether some of these African nations will ever be civilized?

On one hand I think nature has a way of keeping high populations of lesser intelligence (for lack of a better word) at bay, on the other hand, the rest of the civilized world sends billions over there, thus prolonging the agony.

Can they ever be self sufficient?

Does it really help them to give them a handout? Or does it just serve to make us feel better of ourselves?

The 1960's "War On Poverty" here started such a handout program. Is everyone out of poverty yet?

What makes it really bad is the innocent children involved in both cases you mention.

I thought you'd like that as I stated it the same way Bush did once!!!

Guess it went past you.

Africa is a great place, but it's like any place here or there....you have places with azzholes ( Alabama comes to mind) that tend to give the whole deal a bad name.

If you ( general term) have not seen 'Africa" , I'd suggest to put it on your BUCKET LIST!! It's well worth the time and money.

Mike, the country was not only self sufficient, but a major exporter of agricultural products, resulting in the second largest economy in Africa.
The decision by western countries in 1965 to outlaw the existing government at the time, due to it being dominated by white ministers as the right to vote was linked to education standards in an effort to prevent the country going the way of other African states. During this time of UN imposed economic sanctions and communist sponsored civil war, only the communist backed "nationalists" were recognised by the U.N. and experienced moderate (pro Western) politicians, were shunned.
The atrocities committed by Mugabe's terrorists during the civil war often involve mutilation of victims as a form of political intimidation.
After he came to power, he continued his war on the people of the country, including he massacre of thousands of Matabele people in the 80"s and the murder and torture of white farmers in 2000. His "war veterans" supposedly ex terrorists from the civil war era ended in 1980 include large numbers of youths not even born then, are the grass roots to his holding power by terrorising the civil population. Most of what has occurred over the years has been selectively ignored by the western media, with all the effort that went into the destruction of pro western and war time ally Rhodesia in order to bring the basket case Zimbabwe into being, makes one wonder if there isn't an agenda to keep Africa (potentially the richest Continent in the world) dependent on handouts and in constant poverty!

Only part of Africa I ever got to see was the north coast........the beach outside of Sfax is magnificent. And the arab horses handle the desert really well.......I'm not too fond of the arab saddles, though.
