Secret Santa Gives $100 Bills To Needy

Kansas City Tradition Continues As New Secet Santa Takes Place Of Man Who Gave Away $1.3M

KANSAS CITY, Mo. , Dec. 21, 2007

(AP) Susan Dahl had spent four months homeless in Colorado and just been on a harrowing 10-hour bus trip through sleet and snow. Hungry and broke, all she wanted to do was get back to family in Minnesota.

That's when a tall man in a red coat and red hat sat next to her at the downtown bus station, talked to her quietly and then slipped her $100 on that recent December afternoon.

The man was doing the work of Larry Stewart, Kansas City's original Secret Santa who anonymously wandered city streets doling out $100 bills to anyone who looked like they needed it. Stewart died of cancer at age 58 earlier this year. But his legacy lives on.

"He said, 'Here's a $100 bill ... and this is in memory of Larry Stewart,'" said Dahl, 56.

Over about a quarter century, Stewart quietly gave out more than $1.3 million to people in laundromats, diners, bus stations, shelters and thrift stores, saying it was his way of giving back at Christmas for all the wealth and generosity he had received in his lifetime.

For years, Stewart did not want his name known or want thanks or applause, but last December he acknowledged who he was and used his last few months while battling cancer to press his message of kindness toward others. He even trained some friends in the ways of Secret Santa.

This Christmas, a friend who told Stewart in the hospital that he would carry on for him is out on the streets, handing out $100 bills, each one stamped with "Larry Stewart, Secret Santa."

Between Kansas City and several other cities this Christmas, the new Secret Santa will give away $75,000 of his own money, mostly in $100 bills.

"I didn't want to be a Secret Santa," said the man, a business consultant who lives in the Kansas City area. "I wanted to give Larry money. But last year, he said I had to hand it out myself. So I did, and I got hooked."

This new Secret Santa talks about Larry Stewart to just about everyone he encounters. "Have you ever heard of a man named Larry Stewart?" he asks before handing out $100 or more.

Depending on who he's talking to, the new Secret Santa might say Stewart was a man who believed in making people happy by giving them money they didn't have to ask for, apply for or wait in line for.

"There was this fella named Larry Stewart," he tells a man in the bus station. "He was an old friend of mine. He was called Secret Santa, and every year he would find a few people who might need a little money and he would ask that you pass on the kindness."

People respond differently to the gesture. Some cry. Some scream. A rare few even say "No thanks."

Others take the money and offer their own gifts. like Robert Young, who was homeless and had only 20 cents in his pocket. When Secret Santa gave him $200, Young, 50, took out an old notebook and ripped out a song he had written.

"It's yours now," he told Secret Santa, who thanked Young, and carefully tucked the pages into his pocket.

The new Secret Santa has also started a Web site, and is trying to recruit other Secret Santas across the country. "Larry's dream was for a Secret Santa in every city," Kansas City's Santa said.

There are now a couple apprentices, with more candidates turning up all the time. But, he says, you don't have to be willing to hand out money to be a Secret Santa.

"Anyone can be a Secret Santa," he says. "You don't have to give away $100. You can give away kindness. Help someone."

Tax out of existence? That is what they are doing to the middle class, I think you have it twisted there, steve.

Rich people should not have to pay less as a tax rate in the U.S. or anywhere else but in the U.S. they do. It leads to the concentration of wealth and power. While this fellow might be generous in giving a little money out to others who may be in more need, the very rich have no problem bribing Congress to not pay their fair share of taxes thus putting the burden on everyone else.

I found a long time ago that there are good people who are rich, middle class, and poor. Using that as an example to not have to pay the same percent of taxes as everyone else is just ridiculous.

I notice that this is just income taxes. I would like to see the numbers with ALL taxes. It paints a very different picture than that which is portrayed with just income taxes.

The only reason liberals have to use excessive taxation is because of the insurmountable debt that the bumbling conservatives create worrying about their own agenda's and lack of true leadership....Once the money runs out they lose the election and let the liberals rebuild.....Liberals are forever cleaning up the conservative mess..

As for your quote...the only cause the conservatives have is themselves..........

It was not the liberals who buried the USA in a world of Debt and inner termoil........

Sorry Steve but it is time to build from the inside out.....unfourtunatly the money to help is not there and taxes maybe raised...but do not blame the liberals for it.They never spent trillions just to look back on their preidency to find that they left their country on the verge of a recession...and no answers to any inside the countries questions....

This last Presidency messed up bad...If you cannot see that then your blinded by your own political stubborness.......What direction did it even take the USA?..So Many trash clinton here, but he left George with lots of money and promise.....Where did it all go??????

Although I dislike Clinton for some of the things he did in office that were not "presidential", took to que of republicans on how to get campaign money in trade for favors, and had a very embarrassing pardon policy among other things, it seems George Bush was much, much worse in all of these areas.

You do have to give Clinton credit for being presidential in stopping the overspending and start allowing the SS surplus to start paying down the debt.

All we have from Bush and his republican backers in Congress is a pile of bills and a lot of undoing for the next president. Heck--Clinton even got by with war in the Balkans on a budget. I don't think Bush knows what the word means. Typical rich boy's kid.

It does not matter how you skin the cat, in the end the wealthy people pay the majority of the Bills the U.S. encounters. Rather it is received through income tax, inheritance tax, Capital gains tax, Sales tax. No matter how you look at it at the end of the day the majority of income received to be used by the Government came from the upper percentile of wage earners.

Look at like this if you buy in bulk you get a lower rate the more you buy, well if you are going to be taxed in bulk why should they not get a lower rate the more they pay in, such as in Capital Gains?

Wouldn't the proper thing have been to keep the Social Security money where it was intended for and just cut spending to pay down the debt? Why would you admire someone that just borrowed from Joe to pay Bob?

Social security money is paid in for a specific purpose all Clinton did was tweak the books to make one column look better while creating a debt in another one.

I can not believe you admire this type of financial procedure!

And did he really pay down the debt? If he did then why did the national debt increase while he is in office? He did not pay it down he just moved some numbers from one column to another as you mention in your post so he could claim he paid the debt down. But the figures do not lie, if he paid it down then the debt would not have increased under his presidency and IT DID INCREASE!

When people hear national debt they think it is money owed to China or some foreign country but in reality the majority of the national debt is owed to ourselves because people like Clinton borrowed it from the Social Security fund! That is where the majority of our debt is held, right here in America!

If we are blinded by political stubbornness then you must be blinded by political stupidity! Because Clinton did not leave Bush LOTS OF MONEY as you claim! You really should spend your time worrying about your own home countries finances and leave ours to the tax payers that owe the debt.

Clinton left Bush with a higher National Debt than when he took office!!!!!!! This is a fact!!! You need to quit believing all the Liberal crap you hear and look at some facts! I can not believe you Clinton lovers go around talking like Clinton did some miraculous financial miracle. He spent more than he brought in just like every other President, he took money from our Social Security System so he cold get people like you do believe he did so much good. And when he did cut money he did it at the cost of our military, which meant Bush had to pay to build what Clinton tore down to make his books look better!

The fact is Clinton spent more than he made and increased the debt while in office. Please prove otherwise or admit you are wrong!!!!!!!!!
