TIME Magazine to cover beef production practices

As part of a package of articles on food and food production, the June 12 issue of TIME Magazine is expected to feature an article on beef production practices and the differences between grain-fed and grass-finished beef. The issue may reach subscribers and newsstands as early as this weekend and will be more widely available on Monday, June 5.

National Cattlemen’s Beef Assn. worked with Margot Roosevelt, national news correspondent for TIME, to provide information. Mary K. Young, M.S., R.D. and executive director of nutrition was interviewed for the article in addition to a Colorado feedlot owner who shared how his operation works. Ms. Roosevelt also received a statement from Dr. Gary Weber, NCBA’s animal scientist (and former CSREES National Program Leader); a detailed response to additional questions about cattle feeding; and the opportunity to interview a third-party scientist. According to Roosevelt, she also gathered information from sources who she referred to as grass-fed beef experts.

Roosevelt was specifically interested in antibiotic and hormone use in feedlot animals and how grass-finished beef compares to grain-fed beef related to nutrition, safety, environment and animal welfare.

The full story is not expected to be posted to the publication’s Web (www.time.com) site until next week. The beef production page located at http://www.beefusa.org/BeefProduction.aspx contains numerous fact sheets addressing common questions about beef production.
