Today's Chores

Today, we had to start feeding the cows. The snow just got too hard for them to dig through, especially with so many 2 and 3 year olds, and the fact that they are due to start calving around 2 months from now. It is hard to tell if there is much left out there for them or not. Whatever is left, will be there for them in the spring once the snow melts anyways.

It's has been said before by others but I'll say it too! Those cows are in perfect flesh heading into the heart of winter. They ought to grace the cover of a book about how to raise cattle! :D Hope your winter goes smooth!

Thanks, Leanin' H!

Justin, some of them were happy to see us, we started feeding a bale every day about a week ago, just to increase the feed quality a bit. Some were there to meet us, some were still happy grazing.

One interesting thing I did notice was, that the younger cows (bred heifers to 4 year olds) were more content out grazing than the older girls. There were several times when we went out, that the young cows would be out grazing and the older girls would be eyeing the gate for home. This is the first year that we have not had to be feeding by Mid November.

Cows look good. We are just getting near to the stage of bringing cows off grass on to our swaths. Light snow every day has added up to nearly 2 feet here (less on places without grass).
You calve a bit earlier than us, but I sure like your approach. Your place looks awfully like some of the places between Bethune and Craik/Girvin.

We are a bit west and south of those places. Not actually as flat around here as those pictures make it look, we are in a bit of a bowl here, lots of hills within 15 miles of us.....
