Well 6-6-6 turned out to be a pretty good day-- finished calving heifers today...1st week of June is pretty much my cutoff date but this week I saw 4 new calves in the pasture-if my records are right the cows should be done --- then today my last heifer I still had in the corral calved...

Its tough calving heifers this time of year- I think I could get used to it- Don't think I will have to worry about any frozen ears

I liked wierd dates for births when I was young. Used to like number sequences, be able to remember telephone numbers because they would match some pattern in my head. My daughter was born 9 -9-80 and I wished she was born in 1981 instead... My son was born 4-16 (also a nice sequence) but 4-16-84 isn't that great a sequence. Whatever it is that makes us like numbers when we're young goes away in the early 40s so I have to program all my phone numbers now...

Gee, Reader 2, I was really beginning to think we didn't have anything in common  :) , but I like to watch numbers also. If your son who was born 4-16 would have been born in '64 instead of '84, it would have been a good sequence.

On our calf ear tags, we put the chronological order on the top part of the tag, then our Spearhead brand, and then the number of the calf's mother on the bottom. It is always nifty when the two numbers, through sheer happenstance, come out the same or are reversed, or have some sort of other numerical "order". I also kind of nickname cows for their eartag number. 308 is "Nebraska" and 402 is "Nebraska, Too" because those are Nebraska's area codes. Of course we have "Montana" (406) and "South Dakota" (605), also. 911 gets called "Emergency", 711 is "Convenience", 410 is "Shotgun", 270 is "Rifle", 230 is "Time to go to the Dentist", etc.

Our replacement heifers always get numbered in the order they go down the chute. One time, two first-calf heifers that were numbered 844 and 845, had baby calves within ten minutes of each other, as they lay side by side in a fairly large pasture. Anyway, watching numbers is fun if some sort of order comes together out of chaos.
