I thought I would show how we are feeding cattle this year. This is the first year we have not been starting a tractor to feed. We used to feed our weaned calves in a lot, but this year we are unrolling hay and feeding them cake.

First one is my pickup w/ Hydra Bed, and caker. I was feeding our replacement heifer calves.

Next ones are waiting for the older cows to come for cake, and feeding them.

This cow wanted a handout, and I thought to myself "what would Soapweed do?" , so I grabbed the camera, and here's how it went.

Here is some Barley hay (purchased hay) that our coming two year old heifers really like. It is sure nice feed.

This is waiting for our later calving cows to come for cake, and them eating it too. :D

This shot shows how a little gift from Mother Nature in the form of a flowing spring can make life easier. It has been down to -15 this winter, and not froze up yet. There is a spot just like this down the creek a ways. It is on the new ground we bought this year, and they tell me you never have to chop ice. So far, so good.

Good looking pictures, Tap. I like your country, your cattle , your feed outfit, and the bubbly open spring water. Looks like a good set-up all the way around. Thanks for posting.

Nice pics again Tap. I'm always amazed by all that open range without any brush to bushog. How much would you give for a sack full of acorns where you could get yourself a start on some timber.

Yup and if they grew, then the spring probably wouldn't run no more. :x

You are welcome. If anyone gets as much pleasure out of looking at these pictures, as I do taking them, then it is worth it. I sure admire your pictures, along with others.

You should be a detective in your spare time Cal. lol. It is a good pickup, other than having a rear end that is too high geared. And of course the V10 drinks a lot of petro.

Nothing is a secret anymore.  :)

Great pictures! We put up Barley/Oat/Pea hay last year and it's the 'hay of choice' so far. If we don't feed it first they all walk along with wagon waiting for it. Your critters sure look good :)

We put up Hay Barley almost every year, although Oat hay would be cheaper to plant the yield is a bit less. Cows usually will take that hay before anything else.. Good thing about it usually is that we get 4 5x6 bales per acre out of it and than we can chase it will Millet ad get another 3 bales an acre.... If we have a late warm spell we even get to graze regrowth on the millet field so it is a win win all the way around... Busy days usually getting the Barley baled and moved..

 We liked your "Soapweed" shot.........

Great pics, and you're probably right about the trees sucking up all your nice spring water.......I think that's why it's gotten so dry down here in later years, too derned many trees (and tree-huggers! :x )

Great pics, love seeing other parts of our great big country! Keep 'em comming!!!!!!!

I bet those hydraulic arms made it easy to create a parking space when you were on vacation in California, probably not another one like it at SeaWorld. :D

Well, ol' Soapweed doesn't hand feed any pet cows anymore. They become too much of a nuisance.

I used to like to feed them out of my hand when I was younger and more idealistic, but now I'm old and grouchy  :) . I like gentle cattle, but I like them to respect "my space" and I will in turn respect "their space".

You know it Cal. They would have known the Clampet's (sp) were in town too. It was probably obvious enough as it was. :)

I think you understood my point Soapweed, but to be clear, when I posted I was referring to your photography genius, rather than how you feed a cow.

I don't mind having a few pets around, so if we are shorthanded (usually the case) when we absolutely need to move them, that they will come a runnin'. Such as if bad weather is coming in the spring, and we need to get them closer to home. I sure remember the personality of a few of these "pets", or "pests" over the years.
