a rough trade in on a plain no frills f-150 is $6,625

a clean f150 is worth $14,050 trade in...

so why would anyone trade it in for $4500?

One important benefit of the "Cash for Clunkers" program, is that it took 700,000 Obama bumper stickers off the road. :p

I bet the ones put on the new cars will still be asking for some HOPE and CHANGE, though

Expensive way to trade in a bumper sticker, don't you think?

Next big program will be "Clunkers for Cash" as soon as all these people that bought new cars that can not afford them let them get repossessed.

Once this happens like it did in housing market we will see people trying to buy Clunkers with Cash because their credit is dinged. But funny thing is the market is pushing used car prices up since so many have been taken off the market with Cash for Clunkers.

Kind of funny when you think about it, well everything except the part that us Tax payers are paying for it all! :(

I thought the trade-ins had to be PRE 1987.

partly right..

The old truck has to be a 2001 model or older,

so I question not only how but why a person would trade in a pickup for $4500 especially one worth much more. and apparently not qualified for the program..

a quick internet search found several for sale the cheapest was an 04 for $17,900 and most 06's were around $19,000 to $26,000

so either the person is really stupid.. or.. well.. I can't thnk of any reason a persons would trade in a vehicle worth at least $17,000 for $4500

heck,... the cheapest stage three I found was a 01 mustang at $11,000

I'm not a car expert, and I haven't seen the actual truck, but I can see no reason to trade the truck in...

I don't think the pictures at the link match those turned in.

But it could be that there was unrepaired damage etc.

I agree the truck could have had damage.. but it had to be drivable -registered- and insured.. an 06 f150 in rough condition was worth more then $4500 trade in.. ..

let alone the value of the engine and upgrades to it.. so it is hard to say what it was really worth.. but if I had an 06 and insurance.. wouldn't it be a bit smarter to get it fixed and sell it for what it is worth?

I don't know to many who have only liability on a truck worth $26,000

so I question the decision...

maybe someone has inadvertently come across a problem with mis-identification of the vehicles or intentional fraud.

because like you, I can't see anyone being that stupid, but I did read a story about the administrators at cars.gov and the incompetency of the "date entry clerks"

So they probably wouldn't have caught such fraud...

but you would have to have a dealer involved also, wouldn't you?

from another list on same site...

3 2007 GMC Acadias

a fairly new crossover worth .. $25 - $29,000

1 2006 350Z Roadster

were these folk really that stupid?

or is someone just adding cars to the list?

I bet the car lots pulled something. I have hard time believing them cars were smashed. Maybe the car lots gave them more trade in above the allotted and pulled something. Or them cars were burnt or wrecked with no insurance so they still had clear titles. If someone wrecks a car with only liability on it they are often stuck with a piece of junk even though they have clear title.
