Heading up the ridge
South Devon at the back
This little shift looks easy but it's a nightmare with baby calves. The ditch is alot deeper when not full of snow. The small calves get down in there and loose track of the cows and turn back. The cows head up over the ridge and if the calves hold up it can be a real gong show. We try and not have to do it in early calving but to do it right you need to really move slow-we hold the cows in that little area-then let them through the gate and hold them again. I dug a little catchpan and move them on the dryside so they hold easier. That short little move brought on Sara's birth-we were moving from west to east that day-Shauna was supposed to drive the truck to the gate and hold them till I came over the ridge with the tailend-she drove through the gate by accident and dumped the cows onto what then was the main highway. About an hour after we got them settled Sara arrived lol. They're heading to another couple weeks of bale grazing about a quarter mile past that ridge.
