Trading Commodities

I've got some money in the stock market, and been losing money hand over fist to be honest. :D Anyway, that's retirement funds for when I'm 65 and still trying to ranch. But for the present, I'd like to take a couple hundred bucks and trade a little on the commodities futures market. I'm online dang near 24/7, so I thought it might be a good learning experience and not a bad way to make a dollar. I don't want to go through a broker, but I don't know how I would go about getting set up to trade commodities online. I checked out E-Trade, but they don't exactly offer what I'm looking for. Anyone have any ideas?

MYT look out the window. See the cattle and the crops you grow and sell. You are already in the commodity business.

Words of Advice:
BUY LOW, SELL HIGH

I'll leave it up to you to figure out what the LOW and HIGH are.

In this wagering game you are planning on undertaking-do not wager more than you can afford to LOSE

Good advice, Larrry.
My son-in-law traded commodities. When he did it for
practice and for fun, he did ok, but when he put real money
up, it didn't turn out very well. His advice for those who want
to trade commodities? Either have a lot to lose, or FORGET IT...

Sonny boy.....you'd be a lot better off spending your time keeping the handle shined up on a pitchfork out in that show steer's pen or else combing and fluffing him. LEAVE THE COMMODITY TRADING TO THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD IT. You are much too young to get ruined by that stuff. Just work hard and smart and let the e trading stuff alone. Trading commodities may not be a bad way to make a dollar, but it sure is a good way to lose two dollars, if ya get my drift :x

:!: It is a little like having a crack habit MYT. Don't get yourself hooked or you will spend all day thinking of how to cover your positions on the up and down and hedging the dollar and Yen and having puts and calls and on and on and at the end of the day you are worn out and haven't gained a thing. I notice you don't spend too much time in Political or Bull and what drives commodities is a tenuous relationship between world weather/production, good/bad news (BSE, Melamine etc) , protectionist politics (world wide), government regulatory burnden (world wide) and unabashed greed. :?

Of course if you are good at it, you can make money at it.

Oky doky, sounds good to me!! :D In that case, per, my wheat is really coming on this year. The new pasture grass has enjoyed the wet weather and few warm days. Hoping it really comes on next spring. Soon as we get calves weaned, I'll have enough to worry about I imagine. Probably really don't need to have anything else to be worrying over. Might just save my hundred bucks towards some "new" (aka, antique) equipment for this coming spring. Looking to plant some oats to hay.

Now that you have been sufficiently discouraged, find yourself and mentor and learn all you can about it. It is a chapter in the "How the World Ticks" book.

I had a stockbroker call here once. He asked if I traded stock I said "Yes".

He asked what kind I said livestock he said what I said livestock if it does'nt eat or poop I was'nt buying it!

Too which he replied Well thats good because I was wanting to talk to someone with money anyhow.

I myself consider my retirement to be my land, equipment and livestock as my retirement program.Goal is at age 60 to have it all paid for then the options should be open sell some land or some cattle or in my case just keep on keeping on. I don't consider the ranching business something I want to retire from trailer building yes but ranching no.Some people spend their whole lives working for a chance to ranch so why in your golden years would you want to quit just to sit back and wait to die. I built a trailer for a rancher from mobridge about 15 years ago he was 78 then an spry as a youth.I seen he had an add in the paper last spring selling some cattle near as I count he's about 93 now he was quite a fella.
