Today was the Old West Days trailride, and hubby and I hosted the event on the Bow & Arrow Ranch. We had 42 dedicated riders to brave the cool fall day and wind. Among the riders was our very own Soapweed and his Guest Shortgrass....whom I so enjoyed meeting. So it'll be interesting to see the same trailride from 2 different camera's...mine and Soapweeds...

(P.s.) To Lilly...it was 49 degrees when we started and it warmed up to a balmy 52 when we got done! I didn't do the coveralls..but I had so many layers on I hardly could get on my horse! You'd of loved it! lol

Sure does look fun. Except for that cold part. As much as ya'lls wind blows...I'da had my coveralls on for sure. I grew up in country where the wind never seems to stop blowin. Cold in the winter time, and hot in the summer, but still windy. I was never so amazed as when we moved here, and you hafta beg for a breeze. Some time your beggin pays off, but most times it don't.
Thanks for takin me along on your trailride. Great photos. And I too will look forward to seein Soapweed's pics as well.

Jazzy...

Thanks for the photo tour of the trail ride! It sure looks like a good time was had by all, even the mule riders

Do you host this ride every year or does it rotate among ranches?

Cheers---

TTB

Heck, it wasn't too bad. I was wearin' my straw hat. :)

On the subject of wind, at the poetry gathering Jack Ostergard from Nebraska recited this original poem.

COUNTRY FUNERAL

Just a cattle country funeral
Not a lot of folks were there
Mostly punchers that he rode with
Who came to express their care.

He'd signed on at this ranch
Many years ago,
Spent a lifetime in the saddle
Went where he was told to go.

In no way was he outstanding
Just an average hand at best.
He was doing what he wanted
On a ranch somewhere out west.

Did his job without complaining
But his constitution dimmed
'Cause whether rain or snow or sunshine
There would always be the wind.

He was very staid and steady,
And his complaints were very few.
If he ever did complain
It was what the wind would do.

Won't be too many miss him.
He led a solitary life.
No long time female relationships
He never took a wife.

Evenings in a bar
Something he'd sometimes do
And a few back-street Rosies
The only girls he ever knew.

The preacher tried to dance around
His somewhat pintoed past.
To send him off with some kind words
'Cause he knew they'd be the last.

As they rolled the sod around him
One cowboy softly said and grinned,
"Well he might not be in Heaven,
But at least he's out of the wind."

:) :) :)

The Old West Days committe decide on where the trailride should take place, and it's different every year. We sure enjoyed being the hosts...I hope we get to do it again sometime.
