Trans Canada Pipeline needs permission

Wow, we have over 20 miles of pipeline here including 4 miles owned by Trans Canada. Never met a pipeline ROW that was in better condition after than before. I am not unfamiliar with respectful negotiations and am able to extract all sorts of perks but environmentally there are always some issues. Also remember that there will be a Caveat for several Meters either side of the line and essentially you loose control of the land use. After the pipeline is done, unless you have in your contract to have it removed, you are left with the liability as well. We will only settle for removal or cement, not inert gas. Pipelines do beat overground power lines by a mile though.

"H"....so much for them 'hiding' when a pizza delivery drives up!!!

FH: I'd go along with the guys. Never know what you might learn from them.

I'm soooo glad we don't have to deal with oil/gas folks here.

Another story:

Yrs ago this area was known for cocaine drops in the woods. Several bears had been found either dead or whacked out from ripping into the bags used in the drops. Even one deer had been dropped on was dead as a hammer from the impact!!

I was out late, cking on my dogs/puppies and I kept hearing a plane making a wide circle...then coming in closer with each turn. This went on for a long time. I called a neighbor who was a " Fur & Feathers" guy and he said they had heard it and was watching. The plane must be looking for a 'signal' light from the woods for a drop spot. " Keep your arse in the house" was his last sentence to me.
Sure.............................

So at that time, being about 20 and a bit reckless, I go out....get up on the nearest ridge, it's about 2AM by then...plane still going around and around.

I whip out my best 'coon hunting light and ' flash' the plane. I do this in what I think is a pattern. Instantly ,I can hear a change in the engine sound. I get scared and tear off to the house.

Never hear the plane the rest of the night as I lay awake waiting for the bad guys to come get me for screwing around with them!!!

2 days later the Fish & Feathers guys report finding a ' drop'..but it was on the other side of the ridge from where I was. So he did see me....just was off his mark a bit!!!

Good story, kola.

I think I'd rather have pipelines as cocaine, tho.
But to each his own. :P

Trans Canada called this morning and got Mr. FH. He has no
problem letting them in. One interesting thing, the adjoining
neighbor who will have the pipeline on his property is a bit
(no, a LOT--) on the nutty side, so who knows what will happen there.
Guess we'll just hide and watch!!!!

I have found the people who ask normally don't do damage - - - -it's the ones who just barg in and try to bull their way thru who will not respect your property.

It goes back to if you want a good relationship you have to work for it - - - - but that does not mean you have to allow yourself to be taken advantage of.

Anyone know how much they pay the landowners for actual pipeline easement?

On our side of the border Richard, rumor has it they are paying $35,000/quarter section crossed. A good friend of mine is a land agent for an oil company, and he said don't believe everything you hear. In some areas, it could be that high, others could get a few hundred, depending on how much land is disturbed for the pipeline, or used for extra workspace. If they get into areas where they have to strip topsoil and create large work areas to do pipe bending or boring under roads and such, they'll pay accordingly to the owner.

Maybe I missed it somewhere but what diameter is this pipe and what kind of pressure will it be compressed to?

I know here they went thru last year they paid $22,000 per 1/2 mile on open ground.I'm sure wooded ground was alot more. When alot of people only paid a $100 an acre for the land years ago it paid pretty well. They also rebuilt the fences with all new materials. I wish I had them run thru my place but I was a few to many miles away.

These pipelines will pay good money to go where they want to go- but won't be held hostage either...
The local gas pipeline was built thru here in the early 80's- and immediately the pipeline became the biggest property taxpayer in the country next to BNSF and a local rancher who used to brag he was the biggest taxpayer in the county (who's wife later divorced him- took half- and dropped him way down in the rolls- but thats another story)....

Anyway when they built the pipeline they built it across the Fort Peck Indian Reservation- which they paid big money to the Tribe for right away- and hired numerous tribal members (some who only showed up on pay day  ) in an agreement with the tribe to hire so many...

Anyway a few years ago the Tribal Council thru the elections got a little radical-and a nutcase tribal chairman they later impeached- and was going to try and tax all white ownings on the Rez-- and was going to put a tax on each cubic foot of gas the Pipeline carried...They came to the stark reality that the pipeline wouldn't be held hostage when the pipeline folks went out and started surveying a new route around the reservation
I noticed this proposed oil pipeline is diverting totally around the reservation....

OT's story is relevant. If you are willing to take less of a payment than your neighbor, and the expense of the change of route is less, the oil/pipeline company will take the lower expense of the two choices.

Competition!, choose wisely. You are only offered the choice so often, when it comes to a pipeline this large and important.

Talk to your neighbors, find out what the competition is willing to charge.

Invite the pipeline company reps. in, give them cake and coffee, and negotiate, don't let the opportunity pass you by, to do at least that.

OT, is there a site I can go to, to see exactly where this pipeline goes?

I don't know of a website- the "proposed' route has been in our local paper a couple of times- The Glasgow Courier- but they have no website.....
If I remember right- it comes right down thru the county- and cross's the Missouri somewhere between Fort Peck Dam and where the Milk runs into the Missouri- just outside the Rez boundary....From there on I didn't pay attention
