Travel update

Having left home last Saturday and stopping to meet and spend the night with BMR and Tam, then travelling on across Sask. and meeting hillsdown and hur hubby, and getting a tour of her unique and wonderful home; we are now in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. We will travel to Tok, Alaska and spend the night. Then the next day we should be at our destination,
Glennellen, Alaska where we have a friend who has a fishing lodge,
So far we have travelled over 2300 miles. The weather has been great,
rainy yesterday, but nice all the rest of the time. We have seen some
amazing country, for sure.

Hopefully, we will catch some fish before heading back home.
Trying to decide whether to go back part way through BC now that the road is open or to go back the way we came. We are hoping to meet up with per at his ranch at Longview and then catch SSAP before we drop
back into Montana.

As I said, just a travel update. We are a long way from home for a couple of country hicks. We wanted to take a boat tour down the Yukon River, but they didn't get enough interest, so they cancelled the tour. They will have one tomorrow, they say, but we need to leave before then. So that was disappointing...but we've gone down to the river and it is awesome.

This is sure different from ranching...it's a big world out there...

Hope everyone is doing well.

I am, but sadly, I was trying to set the date on my camera and lost some of the early pictures I took. And some of those were of hillsdown and her house and probably some of BMR and Tam's place. Also some caribou along the road..............grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.............so I have started over...........I hope hillsdown will send me a picture or two......and there is a good chance we will get back to BMR's so I can retake those.

BTW per, can you direct us (later of course) on a road less traveled when we get past Banff to your ranch? It looks like there might be a road or two that wouldn't have so much traffic on it.

If we go down through BC and then over to Jasper, I'm hoping we might catch up with Jiggerbosss...

There is certainly a variety of country between BMR's and the Yukon.
Pretty amazing actually. And I did get tired of seeing trees from Watson Lake on this way; but it finally changed so there was a little more to look at. Trees are so lovely, but enough is enough...IMO...and of course, where we live, we don't have near enough trees. It's amazing the protection the cows have this far north. Those trees are super for that.
And BMR was right, we really enjpyed travelling the Cowboy Trail (hwy 22). We would recommend that route to anyone.

I have a friend who is an outfitter in Whitehorse. Look up Tim Mervyn in the phonebook and see if he is home or gone hunting. His parents owned Alkali Lake ranch for over 30 years.

If you come through BC on your return trip, Debbie and I will try to meet you at Williams Lake. Then you could cross to Alberta through Banff and Jasper and land basically in Per's yard.

Hey Faster when you get closer give me a call but you might enjoy Jasper to Banff on hwy 93 (Columbia ice field road) 4hrs and then a few miles down the trans Canada to Canmore and then down highway 40 to Longview 2.5 hours. Visit etc then down some of 22 (cowboy trail) to Pincher Creek. A variety of interesting routes to go east from there.

They would have to turn east at Prince George to do that one and there's nothing to see but more rocks and ice there! :D

Now don't you two get arguing they already saw the prettiest country the first day when they stopped here.

It is fun to plan someone else's tour. There is plenty to see between Montana and Alaska. If the Big Muddy Valley is as cool as pictured on Mantracker then you might have a point BMR.

If she's been to Toad River she's now seen the prettiest place on earth

Hope your trip is going well FH, it sure was disappointing to have to go to work while you were passing by. Did you stay at Muncho Lake after Fort St. John? Sounds like your making awfully good time, hopefully we'll see you on your return.

My vote goes to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as the prettiest (and most recognizable) place in the world. The Teton Mountains as a backdrop just can't be beat. :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone. We were going to go around by the 'Top of the world' highway on the first leg home, but the road is washed out because of so much rain. They were doing convoys twice a day, but it has been raining more, so they may close that road altogether.

Per, your route is what we were thinking of doing. I need to get a map out and take another look...but if we can catch you at Williams Lake, gcreek, we sure would do that. Maybe send me your phone number in a PM. And I didn't get your message about calling the fellow at Whitehorse until tonight. We were out of cell service and internet service til we arrived here at Glennallen today.

Yes, we stayed at Muncho Lake--Northern Rockies Lodge and I would not recommend anyone stay there. Hamburgers were $16.75, fuel was $1.51 liter with the room discount (we didn't buy any fuel  ). The room was okay but very spendy as well. Last night we stayed at Cleft of the Rock B&B at Tok, Alaska and that was super nice and had a great breakfast.

Now we are at our destination. Went picking wild raspberries and had them for dessert with heavy cream. Supper was moose backstrap,
bowtie pasta with fresh basil and tossed salad with homemade bleu cheese dressing. It was delicious. We had never eaten moose, and to tell the truth, I'm not much on wild game. This was incredibly good. She cooked it on the grill outside...lip smacking good. They said it was a spike bull.

We are going to Valdez fishing one day and our friends are flying us into their other place tomorrow or the next day.

Hillsdown, what was so disappointing about losing the pictures was the fact that I was going to get it enlarged and framed. So maybe we can figure something out using one of your pictures. Thanks so much!

The road from above Haines Junction to the border was really rough.
It lasted for about 150 miles. I read where it is built on permafrost and they just can't maintain it. I was wanting to go home the other way, and see Dawson City, but as I mentioned, there is a good chance the road will be closed.

Have a good evening, everyone!

I have a friend in Dawson City also. :D

A neighbor of ours goes up there gold mining in May and returns at freeze-up sometime in early October.

Holy smokes Faster. You didn't need to drive all the way up to the Yukon to find a $16 hamburger. I'm sure we could accomplish that in Calgary. Boy do you ever make good time traveling. Here's to a relaxing time in Alaska.

Silver, is that up near Chetwynd?

FH, So glad to hear you're having a great time and seeing interesting places. Are you two going salmon fishing? We were in Alaska this Spring and missed the salmon running by 3 weeks- big disappointment since that was something we've never seen. Couldn't even see the fish ladders because they were closed for cleaning. Hioe tiy catcg kits
