'Knife in the back': Fury over House dropping Sandy aid vote

By Josh Levs, CNN

updated 12:33 PM EST, Wed January 2, 2013

(CNN) -- Lawmakers on both sides slammed House Republican leaders Wednesday for failing to vote on a bill that would have provided billions of dollars in aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy.

"The Republican Party has said it's the party of 'family values.' Last night, it turned its back on the most essential value of all, and that's to provide food, shelter, clothing and relief for people who have been hit by a natural disaster," Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican, said in an interview with CNN.

"Anyone from New York or New Jersey who contributes one penny to the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee should have their head examined," King said. It's very rare for a lawmaker to call on anyone not to support his own party.

President Barack Obama urged the House GOP leadership to hold a vote Wednesday -- the final full day of the current Congress. At noon Thursday, a new Congress will be sworn in, and will have to start from scratch in passing any legislation.

GOP's King: GOP 'writing off' NY, NJ
"It has only been two months since Hurricane Sandy devastated communities across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut as well as other eastern states. Our citizens are still trying to put their lives back together," Obama said in a statement.

Noting that the Senate passed the aid package with bipartisan support, Obama said the House "has refused to act," even as some families need support immediately "with the bulk of winter still in front of us."

"When tragedy strikes, Americans come together to support those in need. I urge Republicans in the House of Representatives to do the same, bring this important request to a vote today, and pass it without delay for our fellow Americans," Obama said.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, issued a joint statement saying the "continued inaction and indifference by the House of Representatives is inexcusable."

The aid package put forward by Obama is a "responsible" proposal, the governors said. "This failure to come to the aid of Americans following a severe and devastating natural disaster is unprecedented. The fact that days continue to go by while people suffer, families are out of their homes, and men and women remain jobless and struggling during these harsh winter months is a dereliction of duty.

"When American citizens are in need we come to their aid. That tradition was abandoned in the House last night. The people of our states can no longer afford to wait while politicians in Washington play games."

Some of the harshest comments came from King.

"There are a number of Republicans who maybe can kiss their seat goodbye ... because of what was done to them," he said, pointing fingers at House leadership for putting GOP lawmakers in the region stricken by Sandy in jeopardy. "If you can't provide the most basic assistance for your district, who needs you in Congress?"

He added that while Republican leaders talk about the party having an image problem, "this is a reality problem they have."

King put the blame squarely on House Speaker John Boehner. The No. 2 Republican in the House, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, had guaranteed a vote on the the $60.4 billion package, King said.

He added that he was chasing Boehner "all over the House last night" and that Boehner had said everything would be taken care of after the vote on the fiscal cliff. But Boehner left.

"He wouldn't tell us why. He just decided to sneak off in the dark of night."

King called the House leadership's move a "knife in the back."

Boehner did not immediately respond publicly to King's assertions.

I watched this for a while on C-SPAN and it was more than trouble in the Repub Party-- it was downright hate and contempt for each other...

I don't know how many times it was brought up by both Repubs and Dems- that Truman had a terrible Congress to put up with- which he called the "Do-Nothing Congress" for that reason---BUT that this current Congress has now passed their record on doing nothing!

And old Boehner was the object of all the hate last night as apparently he lied to not only the Dems but his Repubs too---- but now was no where to be found...

I was waiting for some Congressman to mention where he probably was and why he couldn't come back and call for a vote (pickled in some Pub- working on his 3rd or 4th jug of vino for the day)-- but I guess since being that honest would have got them censured- they restrained themselves... :p

Read it OT....as usual about 60% of it is nothing but PORK. Hollywood, NASCAR, refunds for rum excise taxes charged to Puerto Rico, and dozens of other items. The affected areas need less than half what was asked for. Hell no don't vote on it.

The provision, under section 168(i)(15) of the federal tax code, allows speedways to write off their costs over seven years. Typically, such expensing occurs over a much longer period of time, from 15 to 39 years. The cost of the NASCAR tax credit to taxpayers has been estimated at some $40 million--over and above any tax incentives provided by state and local authorities.

If I'm not mistaken, those pork items are included in the fiscal cliff deal. there is even more pork in the Sandy Aid bill.

Alaska even gets a bunch of cash. I thought obama closed Gitmo

Now dubbed the 'Sandy scam' by its critics, only a portion of the federal funding goes directly to states and victims hardest hit by superstorm Sandy in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

Instead $150 million is slated to benefit Alaskan fisheries, $8 million to homeland security and the justice departments for new cars, office equipment, furniture and 'mobile X-Ray machines,' and $41 million for eight military bases including Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, the New York Post reports.

So- you then support having a House Speaker that just lies- and sneaks out to go partying rather than honoring what he and his aides promised... :???:

Chris Christie drops bomb on GOP leaders

By John Avlon, CNN Contributor

updated 7:42 PM EST, Wed January 2, 2013

New York (CNN) -- "It's why the American people hate Congress. Unlike the people in Congress, we have actual responsibilities."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie dropped a bomb on Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Congress for refusing to allow a vote on Hurricane Sandy relief in the final hours of the 112th Congress. It was an instant classic of principled political outrage. It provided a strong dose of what Washington has been missing: blunt, independent leadership.

Christie prosecuted the case by pointing out that hurricane relief had been provided more quickly to others: For victims of Katrina after 10 days and victims of Hurricane Andrew in Florida after 30 days. But residents of the New Jersey and New York coast have been waiting 65 days to date for some relief.

Christie also accurately pointed out that Northeast states such as New Jersey and New York send more to the federal government in taxes than they get back in federal aid, unlike many of the red states represented by conservatives in Congress. The "makers versus takers" narratives fall apart fast when confronted with reality.

Pulling no punches, Christie declared: "Last night, the House majority failed most basic test of leadership and they did so with callous disregard to the people of my state. ... It was disappointing and disgusting to watch." He also unapologetically named names: "There's only one group to blame ... the House majority, and their Speaker, John Boehner." He added that the relief bill "just could not overcome the toxic internal politics of the House majority."

But Christie also took the high road in terms of decrying the overall atmosphere of hyperpartisanship in D.C., arguing correctly that "Americans are tired of the palace intrigue and political partisanship of this Congress ... this used to be something that was not political. Disaster relief was something that you didn't play games with."

Yep--old Boner could be gone-- and within a couple years if they don't change direction-- Repubs will be heading the direction of the Dinos too..

Hopefully replaced by the true conservatives- that believe as the Repubs of old-- the Libertarians....

Why didn't the folks with Hurricane Frederic in 1979 or Floridans in Tropical storm Fay? Or the folks with Katrina, Hugo, Andrew, or the Fires in Texas-- or earthquakes in California-- or the Floods of the Midwest-- or the blizzards that took out miles of power lines and left folks without power or many of the other disasters that insurance companies call acts of nature and won't insure against?

But now you are going to select the northeast portion of the country- and Boner is going to lie to them-- and shun them? Couldn't be because those are blue states could it be :???: ... NA- Congressmen wouldn't play partisan politics- would they :???:

Problem is-- its all backfiring on the Repubs and their continuing Party of NO BS....

Got any proof that Boehner went out partying, or is your statement a lie, too? You blow more out your a$$ than all the hurricanes put together.

FYI, Christie is just another RINO. Bless the folks that voted no, to save us from more bloated pork and other typical Democrat bullpuckey!

Christie is about the worst RINO on the books today.. a real backstabbing self-grandizing lieing media slut..

all he cares about is his career..

the bill is full of pork... and should be stripped of the pork.. but everyone knows that if it went to the floor for a vote it would pass because no-one would stand up and vote against it because of the title of the bill...

and that should have been done moths ago,

oh that speech about himself to himself ?

Chris Christie's Keynote Speech Was Act 'Of Political Selfishness'

Rachel Maddow tore into Chris Christie's speech immediately after the New Jersey governor wrapped up the keynote address at the Republican national convention on Tuesday night.

Christie gave the last political speech of the evening, and went on at length before making a major reference to Mitt Romney. Maddow began her analysis by saying that she was a big fan of his, and had been looking forward to hearing him speak because he brought a certain "looseness to his political conversation."

Then, she changed her tone and let loose on his address, saying, "This speech not only was a bad speech. I think this was one of the most remarkable acts of political selfishness I have ever seen." She said that his words were "shocking" and "opposite to what I expected."

Panelist Steve Schmidt said that the speech failed to sell Mitt Romney. Maddow remarked that Chris Christie gave a speech about himself.

"He waited 1800 words into a 2600 word speech to even bring [Romney] up," she pointed out.

it is not often I am on the same page as Maddow.. but she nailed in on the selfishness in his speech.

Yep- one of the Repubs key Convention speakers (and finalists for the VP nomination) is now saying the Republican leaders of Congress are not to be trusted ...

Christie at his press conference said that he no longer believed assurances from House leadership, who had promised up until Tuesday night that a $27 billion bill with a $33 billion amendment would get a vote.

“It’s why the American people hate Congress,” he said.
